Dragons Open Season Falling to Parkside, 1-0

KENOSHA, Wis. – MSU Moorhead soccer saw a strong performance in net from junior Quinn Carter to open the 2024 season on Friday afternoon. The Dragons turned in a hard effort, but eventually fell to Parkside, 1-0.

The match was the first under new Dragon head soccer coach Scott Forster

The Ranger offense would almost immediately test Dragon goalkeeper Quinn Carter to open the match. Carter stopped her first shot of the season just 39 seconds into the contest. Parkside would again be thwarted by Carter in the sixth minute.

Parkside would fire off another shot in the 18th minute that was once again saved by the junior from Mandan, N.D. Carter would continue her strong start to the season in the 34th minute as she would again stop a Parkside attempt on the net. By the end of the first half, Carter had tallied four saves with the Rangers attempting eight total shots.

While MSUM employed a large amount of its roster in the first 45 minutes, the Dragons would not attempt a shot. Nevertheless, the teams were at a 0-0 stalemate at the intermission.

Carter would continue her hot streak in the net to open the second half as she would save another Ranger shot at the 54-minute mark. Two minutes later, Carter would stall another attack from Parkside to keep the score even. The junior would make another pair of saves later on to stave off the Ranger charge. Parkside's offense would eventually strike permanently in the 67th minute. Junior forward Emily Mikkelson would break the scoreless streak with a goal to put the home team up 1-0.

MSUM began to show some offensive potency as the match crossed into the 80th minute. True freshman Gracie Sauvageau fired the first Dragon shot of the contest, missing high. Sauvageau's offense led to another Dragon mark not even a minute later. Fellow true frosh Mary Cox took a low shot towards the net that was met by Parkside freshman keeper Lola Minic.

As time waned, Carter would stop another Ranger shot in the 87th minute to keep the deficit at one goal. Carter finished the game with 11 saves, one shy of her career high set on September 16, 2022 against Augustana. While Carter was superb, Parkside would hang on for a 1-0 victory.
