MSUM Earns Pair of Wins Over Cobbers, Marauders to Begin Fall Play

MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead tennis began fall competition with an impressive pair of victories on a sunny Moorhead Sunday.

MSUM defeated Concordia College 7-0 to open the day and topped the University of Mary, 5-2, to conclude the afternoon.

MSUM made it 10 straight victories over the Cobbers in a convincing 7-0 victory to open the morning. The Dragons would completely own doubles competition as the number one team of Shaelyn Johnson and Luzmary Diaz Castillo would claim their first win of the year in a 6-0 result. At number two doubles, the newfound team of Tiannah Gu and freshman Sophia Felderman collected a 6-0 win over Ava Lowman and Isabelle Smith. To wrap pairs play, Claire Nemmers and Katryna Hansen would win 6-2.

In singles action, Johnson and Diaz Castillo would showcase their talents with impressive straight set victories. Gu would add to the Dragons team lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Annalise Skrade. Felderman earned her first collegiate singles win at the number four position in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Smith. Both Hansen and Nemmers each took home wins in singles play via straight sets.

The Dragons would snap a four-match losing streak to the Marauders thanks to another fine performance in doubles play. Johnson and Diaz Castillo would lead it off with a 6-2 win over Ilona Freitag and Maria Estinvil. Hansen and Nemmers would win their bout at the number three spot to clinch the team point. However, the effort from Gu and Felderman at the number two position primed MSUM for more great singles play. The duo defeated Chloe Chong and Anna Sueflohn by a 7-6 count, but needed a gritty 7-3 tiebreaker victory to clinch it.

In singles play, MSUM was again guided by Diaz Castillo and Gu, who each took straight set wins from their opponents. The freshman Felderman turned in an impressive performance against Sueflohn. Felderman dropped the first set 6-4 before storming back to claim wins in the ensuing two sets (6-4, 10-8). Hansen would own her singles match, winning in straight sets to firmly clinch the team win for the Dragons.
