WINONA, Minn. – Minnesota State Moorhead soccer's effort was highlighted by a goal from
Kaci Malo in a Sunday afternoon match with Winona State. The Dragons fell to the Warriors, 5-1.
"It's a rough day to look at the score board but every loss is a lesson," said head coach
Scott Forster. "This team is turning towards challenges and prepared to push each other"
The Warriors would open the offense logging the first shot on goal within the first six minutes of action.
Quinn Carter would stop the chance with the Dragons blocking another Warrior attempt not long after. Sophomore
Madalynn Hopkins would fire off the first shot on goal for MSUM just after the 11-minute mark. Winona State keeper Abigail Rounds made the save. The Warriors would have another opportunity on net not even a minute later, which Carter also stalled.
After a
Kaci Malo shot on goal in the 13
th minute, Winona State would open the scoring with a goal at 14:14. The home squad would strike again not even two minutes later, going up 2-0 after a score at 16:06. Moorhead would try to split the deficit with shots on goal from
Lilly Johnson and Hopkins, but Rounds would stop both.
Lilly Allen would try a shot on a freekick just before halftime which was also saved by Rounds. At the break, Winona State led 2-0 with Carter saving four shots. All five of MSUM's attempts in the half were logged on goal.
Winona State would score again within the first five minutes of the second half to extend their lead to three goals. Hopkins would try another shot on net in the 53
rd minute, which was saved by Rounds. The Warriors would respond, scoring their fourth goal of the match five minutes later. While the Warriors would still attempt shots, Moorhead's backline would fend off another score.
In the 72
nd minute of action, Johnson would dribble herself free from a Warrior marker. The senior would lift a pass which was then headed in by Malo, providing Moorhead its first score. The goal is the first of Malo's career and logged Johnson's first assist of 2025. Winona State would score again before time expired, winning the contest, 5-1.
