MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead soccer was paced by its eight outstanding seniors in a competitive contest with second-ranked Minnesota State on Sunday. The Mavericks defeated the Dragons, 2-0.
"I'm so proud of our effort and execution against a high-level opponent like Minnesota State. I'm equally as proud that we were able to let out seniors shine on this day," said head coach
Scott Forster. "I'm indebted to this senior group for what they've taught me and how they have helped our program raise the bar."
Minnesota State would immediately try to use the strong Moorhead wind to their advantage, logging a shot on goal off the opening kickoff. Starting goalkeeper
Quinn Carter was quick to make the save. In the game, all eight of MSUM's senior logged a start with
Rylee Truslow beginning the game as a midfielder. The Mavericks would have a shot hit off the top post just ahead of the nine-minute mark with the visitors putting the ensuing rebound in net. Seniors
Lilly Johnson and
Abbey Johnson would log shots for MSUM after the Maverick goal with neither finding the target.
Carter would continue to stall the Maverick offense, stopping a shot just after the 10-minute mark.
Jensen Seidel would register Moorhead's first shot on goal at 18:59, requiring a save from Maverick goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine. Fellow senior
Brooklyn Broderick would try a shot not long after that missed the net. Throughout the rest of the half, Carter would save five Maverick attempts on net to keep the score at 1-0 after 45 minutes.
Lilly Allen had a solid try at the net just before halftime on a freekick, which forced McAlpine off her feet to save.
The second half would see Carter move into the striker position with Truslow taking command of goalkeeping duties. Much like the Mavericks, Moorhead would attempt a long boot off the kickoff. It was the senior keeper Carter who attempted the shot, which missed high and to the left. Truslow would make three quick saves to open the half with the Dragons having an opportunity from Seidel that was saved by McAlpine. Just after the 70-minute mark, senior
Blayke Hurley would try a long ball shot that nearly made it past McAlpine before making a save. Minnesota State would answer right back with a goal at 71:52 to take a two goal lead.
Moorhead would have a final chance on net just ahead of the 86-minute mark as Seidel logged her third shot on goal of the match. McAlpine made the save, preserving the clean sheet. The Mavericks would win behind the 2-0 score with Carter and Truslow each making seven saves.
Lizzy Jaraczeski, Hurley and Allen would go the full 90 for the Dragons. The effort from Jaraczeski moves her minutes total to 1,283 for the 2025 season.
