MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead soccer used an aggressive approach to overcome both heavy winds and the University of Jamestown in an NSIC matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons used a second-half goal from
Lilly Johnson to edge the Jimmies, 2-1.
"The Northern Sun is a challenging place to play let alone win," said MSUM head soccer coach
Scott Forster. "I'm so glad for the unity, grit and determination from this team to get the result they deserved playing the Dragon way."
Moorhead would get the offense going early and often as
Madalynn Hopkins would be swift to get a shot on net in the second minute. Hopkins would have another chance at a goal in the sixth minute with both shots stalled by Jamestown keeper Skylar Lind. The Jimmies would respond following the second shot from Hopkins, tallying two shots on net not even a minute later with both chances stalled by
Rylee Truslow.
At the outset of the second shot on goal, the Dragons would press the issue on the attack with
Madison Sharp firing off a long ball across the field. The ball would bounce before landing in front of a sprinting
Brooklyn Broderick. The redshirt senior would race forward and fire off a shot that found the net for Broderick's second goal of the season. With the lovely offensive effort, MSUM led 1-0 early in the first half of play.
Lilly Johnson would try to give the Dragons another goal in the 11th minute with the shot stalled by Lind. Truslow would stop two shots on goal from the Jimmies throughout the remainder of the half. On the other end, Hopkins and
Gracie Sauvageau would register shots on goal, but Moorhead would not find another score before the halftime horn. The Dragons led 1-0 at halftime, out shooting the Jimmies 11-7.
The Dragons would continue to pepper in shots on net early in the second half as Broderick and
Lizzy Jaraczeski logged shots on the net. Jamestown would capitalize on a corner kick try in the 58th minute to tie the match at one goal each. The Jimmies would have another chance to score in the 64th minute, but the shot was stopped by Truslow. Jaraczeski would have a wonderful chance to score in the 69th minute, but the rocket shot careened off the top post.
Not long after, Hopkins would play a ball into the box with Johnson awaiting the pass. Johnson would dribble towards the net and fire off a shot that found the back of the net. The score was Johnson's second of the weekend and the second on the year for the senior. Throughout the remainder of the match, Moorhead would see chances on net from
Hanna Barthel and
Ana Cecilia Walker, with neither being able to give the Dragons an insurance goal. Truslow would stop the final Jamestown shot in the 88th minute, sealing the match for Moorhead. Johnson's goal proved to be the game-winner as the Dragons won, 2-1. The Dragons held a 23-14 shot advantage, including a 15-8 lead in the shots on goal category.
