MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead men's basketball is slated to host the 2025 East-West Shootout this Friday and Saturday inside Nemzek Fieldhouse. The Dragons take on 17th-ranked Black Hills State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on South Dakota Mines on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Live video and stats will be available at msumdragons.com. All tournament games will run through MSUM's channels on the NSIC Network and Sidearm Live Stats.
Matchup History...The Dragons and Jackets have only matched up on four occasions all-time. Moorhead defeated Black Hills State at last season's East-West Shootout by a 69-57 line. MSUM also defeated the Jackets the year prior, 86-72. In four meetings with the Yellow Jackets, the Dragons hold a 3-1 record with their lone loss coming on a buzzer-beater in 2022-23. The teams first played November 21, 2014 where the Dragons defeated Black Hills State (80-61) in a neutral site affair in Fairbanks, Alaska. Moorhead also has a limited history with the Rockers with Saturday being only the fourth all-time meeting. The Dragons have won all three prior matchups. All three games have been played as part of the East-West Shootout.
MSUM At The East-West Shootout...Entering the final year of a four-year rotation, Moorhead has been outstanding at the East-West Shootout. The lone Dragon loss came in the tournament's first year when Black Hills State topped MSUM, 78-77. MSUM holds a 5-1 record at the tournament, having outscored opponents 442-392 in those six games.
Sam Gets Going...Senior forward
Sam Hastreiter had a career day against Pitt State last Saturday. Hastreiter scored a Dragon career-high 20 points with three rebounds and two assists. The Lincoln, Neb., native was effective from the floor, shooting an impressive 66.6 percent clip, including a 60 percent mark from long range. Hastreiter was also a perfect five of five from the charity stripe against the Gorillas.
An Immediate Impact...Redshirt junior guard
Dominic Gooden showcased how electric of a scorer he can be in MSUM's first two contests. Gooden scored 16 points in his Dragon debut against second-ranked Washburn on Friday. The Cleveland, Ohio, native would drop in 10 more points on Saturday against Pitt State. In both games, Gooden came off the bench to provide the scoring punch.
Frosh Got Buckets...Freshman point guard
Isa El-Amin has quickly established himself as a reliable offensive threat for Moorhead. El-Amin scored 14 points in his collegiate debut against Washburn on Friday, following that showing up with 10 points against Pitt State. El-Amin also averaged three rebounds and 2.5 assists for the weekend.
Go-Go Gerads...Redshirt sophomore
Tysen Gerads showed his improvement on the floor, starting at two guard for the Dragons last weekend. Gerads scored a career-best 14 points against the Gorillas on Saturday, also posting five rebounds and two assists. In the game, Gerads shot 50 percent from the floor (5-10).
Distributing The Scoring...Moorhead has done a nice job of spreading the scoring load out across the first two games. Against second-ranked Washburn, 10 different Dragons scored a point. On Saturday against Pitt State, the same was true as 10 separate Moorhead players notched two or more points. For the weekend, MSUM converted at a 40.4 percent clip from the field.
Jason Kemp is in his first season as MSUM's head men's basketball coach.
