Dragon Wrestling Set for Bouts with Huskies, Rangers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead wrestling is set for a daunting week of road duals to close 2025. The Dragons take on St. Cloud State on Thursday at 7 p.m. before traveling for a dual with Parkside on Saturday at 5 p.m. 

Live video and results will be available at msumdragons.com. Moorhead last competed on December 12 in 1 34-6 dual loss to 12th-ranked Augustana. 

Don't Sleep On Babitt...Sophomore Liam Babitt would earn a major victory at heavyweight against Augustana on December 12. Babitt would fall down by a point to 15th-ranked Jaret Peterson before Babitt collected over a minute of riding time in the second period. The sophomore would earn a key takedown in the third period en route to a 4-2 ranked victory over Peterson. Babitt bolsters a team-high 10 wins so far this season. 

PJ Keeps Humming...Senior Pedro Velazquez who would get Moorhead on the board against the Vikings on December 12. Velazquez used a first-period takedown to claim a 4-2 decision over Augie's Luke Koenen. So far this season, Velazquez has six wins on his ledger and is ranked 20th at 141 pounds per The Open Mat.

Down To The Wire...Senior Jacob Thomas would give third-ranked Cael Larson all he could handle at 157 pounds on December 12. Thomas secured a quick takedown in the first period. Larson would later build an 8-4 lead in the third period before Thomas provided a late rally. The senior secured a takedown to pull within one point. However, Thomas' offense came with only nine seconds remaining in the match with Larson claiming a 10-7 result. 

Crunching The Numbers...While Babitt leads the team with 10 wins, there are several other Dragons with impressive marks so far in 2025-26. Freshman Gunner Hostetter is just behind Babitt with eight wins, followed closely by Edon Davis and Wyatt Powell. Babitt leads the team with four wins by fall with Davis holding three pins of his own. Powell leads the roster with three technical falls. Velazquez holds four major decisions on his ledger so far this season. 

Welcome Back...Senior Jonas Anez made his triumphant return to the mat for Moorhead on December 12. Anez had not wrestled competitively since November 11, 2023, as he faced multiple lower body injuries. The Willmar, Minn., native moved up two weight classes to compete at 184 pounds for the Dragons last week. Anez came to Moorhead as a 165-pounder in 2022-23.

Kris Nelson is in his 17th season as MSUM's head wrestling coach.
