NSIC Quarterfinals Features Dragons and Vikings

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead men's basketball descends onto the Sanford Pentagon this weekend to begin play at the NSIC Tournament. The third-seeded Dragons take on 11th-seeded Augustana in a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday at 7 p.m. 

Live video and stats will be available at msumdragons.com. Please note that the NSIC Basketball Tournament will be on Midco/Midco Sports Plus with David Brown and Brad Newitt on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on AM 1100/FM 92.3 with Jace Denman and 'Big Game' James McCarty on the call.

Matchup History...MSUM claimed the lone regular season matchup with the Vikings back on January 24. However, Augie did push the Dragons to overtime before MSUM eventually won, 89-80. JaMir Price led the way for MSUM in the victory, scoring 29 points with six rebounds and five assists. The Dragons have topped the Vikings in four of the last five meetings between the programs. However, the teams have been relatively even since 2010 with Augie winning 11 games to MSUM's 10 in the series. 

Last Time Out...MSUM continued to look sharp in two crucial NSIC tests last weekend. The Dragons took down 23rd-ranked Winona State on Friday before smacking Minnesota State on Saturday, 81-55.  The two victories moved MSUM's win streak to eight games and assured them a bye in the NSIC Tournament. 

Dragons On All-NSIC...Junior Logan Kinsey, freshman Carson Johnson and junior Jacob Jennissen were all named to the All-NSIC team on Thursday. Kinsey and Johnson were tabbed as First Team performers while Jennissen was a Second Team honoree. It is the first all-conference honor for all three student-athletes.

More Than Worthy...On Friday, senior guard Jacob Beeninga was awarded the NSIC's Bob Olson Outstanding Senior of the Year Award. The award is presented to a NSIC men's basketball student-athlete who participates at his institution for four years and is academically superior while making a positive contribution to his team and University. "Throughout his time at Minnesota State University Moorhead, Jacob has made everything and everybody around him better. His enthusiasm, attitude, tireless work ethic and infectious personality has positively impacted not only those at MSUM, but the entire Moorhead community. In the classroom, on the court, and in the community Jacob has been the gold standard of what it means to be a student-athlete in the NSIC," said head coach Tim Bergstraser.

Bergy At The Pentagon...MSUM head men's basketball coach Tim Bergstraser will embark on his third NSIC Tournament on Sunday. Throughout his short tenure, Bergstraser as already collected 70 career wins and has seen success in Sioux Falls. Bergstraser is 3-1 at the Sanford Pentagon in the NSIC Tournament. With last weekend's win over Minnesota State, MSUM notched its third consecutive 20-win season. 

Prize-Winning Jenny...Junior big man Jacob Jennissen was a key piece to MSUM's wins to conclude the regular season. Jennissen averaged 17.5 points, 11 rebounds and one block in a pair of Dragon wins. On Saturday against Minnesota State, Jennissen scored 21 points with 14 rebounds. The Sauk Centre, Minn., native shot an effective 72.2 percent from the floor (13-18) for the weekend while sinking two three-pointers. Jennissen was named to the NSIC's 'Shining Five' for his efforts.

Regional Rank Revealed...MSUM was slotted fourth in the Central Region in the NCAA's second edition of regional rankings. The Dragons were tabbed as 'under consideration' in the first ideation a week ago. 

Quick Scout...Augustana was able to upend fifth-seeded Minnesota Duluth thanks to strong shooting performances top to bottom. Sam Rensch led the Vikings with 19 points, but Augie featured five players with 10 or more points in the win over the Bulldogs. In the first meeting between MSUM and Augie, All-NSICer Tanner Te Slaa lit the Dragons up for 22 points, including four made three-pointers.

Tim Bergstraser is in his third season as head coach of MSUM men's basketball.
