CANYON, Texas – MSU Moorhead softball dropped a pair of games to open the West Texas Invitational.
MSUM fell in game one of the night to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 11-5. The Dragons then dropped a game to 13
th-ranked West Texas A&M in five innings, 10-1.
Game One
The Javelinas would jump on the scoreboard to start the game, earning a single before hitting a home run off
Avery Steffen. Texas A&M-Kingsville would plate two more runs in the second inning to lead 4-0.
Natalie Gonzalez would earn the first Dragon hit in the home half with a two-out single. After stealing second, Gonzalez was driven home in the ensuing at-bat on an RBI single from
Lacey Camden.
While the Dragons were able to gather a run, the Javelinas would score two more in the top of the third on solo home runs. MSUM would answer back as Steffen smacked a double. Steffen would later score followed by a triple from
Annika Norman. The senior would score in the next at-bat thanks to a double from
Eliya Johnson. The Dragons would pull within two runs before the inning's conclusion as Johnson stole home to make the score 6-4.
Texas A&M-Kingsville would extend their lead to six runs in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. While Norman would triple again and later score in the fifth, MSUM would strand runners on second and third. Through five innings, Texas A&M-Kingsville led, 11-5. The Javelinas would go on to win by the same score. Norman, Camden and Gonzalez each had two hits for the Dragons.
Game Two
Norman would continue her strong day with a single in the first inning to provide the contest's first hit. West Texas A&M would score six runs over the first two frames as MSUM was unable to respond in the second. In the third inning, it was again Norman who sparked the Dragon efforts. The senior earned a double, which scored
Jessie Henry, who walked earlier in the inning.
The Buffs would score four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead, 10-1. Johnson would toss a scoreless fourth inning for the Dragons. However, MSUM would not come up with the offense to extend the game, falling 10-1 in five innings.

MSUM (4-4) plays again this morning in an 11:15 a.m. game against Eastern New Mexico. The Dragons will also play West Texas A&M at 3:45 p.m. this afternoon.
