MSUM Falls to Greyhounds, Buffs

CANYON, Texas – MSU Moorhead softball fell in a pair of games at the West Texas Invitational on Saturday.

MSUM fell in game one to Eastern New Mexico by an 11-5 score. The Dragons closed the day in a 10-5 defeat against 13th-ranked West Texas A&M.

Game One

The Greyhounds would score three runs on three hits in the first inning to take a quick lead. Eastern New Mexico would score another five runs in the second inning to lead 8-0, holding the Dragons hitless through two frames. The Dragons would get back on the scoreboard, earning a pair of runs on walks. Eliya Johnson and Lexie Wilson earned the runs batted in for MSUM.

Eastern New Mexico would continue to score in the third inning, plating another four runs on three hits to lead 12-2. The Dragons would cut that deficit in half before the end of the inning, scoring five runs on two hits. Wilson and Lacey Camden drove home runs on walks before Jessie Henry emptied the bases with a three RBI double.

The momentum would be short-lived, however, as Eastern New Mexico score three runs in the top of the fifth. MSUM would not answer in the bottom half, falling via run rule, 15-7.

Game Two

Both teams would remain scoreless through two innings as the lone hit in the contest to that point came from the Buffs. The third inning saw West Texas A&M's potent offense score five runs on three hits to take a commanding lead. However, MSUM would answer right back with five runs of their own in the home half. Olivia Goderis, Teagan Pranchke, Annika Norman, Wilson, Camden and Steffen all had hits in the inning. Norman would knock in two runs on a single. Wilson and Steffen would drive home the additional runs to tie the game.

The game would remain without a run from there until West Texas A&M broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning. A solo shot from the Buffs transitioned into the seventh inning, which saw WTAM score four more runs to lead, 10-5.
