MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead tennis is set to embark on its annual Spring Break trip as the the Dragons are set to compete in five matches in Orlando, Fla., this week.
The Dragons begin the trip on Wednesday in an 11 a.m. matchup with North Park University. Thursday will see MSUM take on both St. Catherine (7:30 a.m.) and St. Thomas Aquinas College (11 a.m.). The Dragons will conclude play in Florida on Friday against Grace College (6:30 a.m.) and Carthage College (12:30 p.m.).
MSUM is coming off a win in its most recent dual, a 4-3 decision over Winona State on February 23. The Dragons would be forced to play from behind following doubles play as the Warriors claimed two of three matches.
Shaelyn Johnson and
Luzmary Diaz Castillo would collect a pairs win in the number one position. The pair defeated Lainey Ristau and Halle Rosentreter by a 7-5 score. Johnson and Diaz Castillo would continue their momentum in singles play, claiming straight set victories in the number one and two spots. Johnson topped Ristau 7-5, 6-2 while Diaz Castillo was dominant against Miranda Daulong, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Both
Katryna Hansen (3-6, 6-0, 6-2) and
Claire Nemmers (4-6, 7-5, 10-7) would see three-set matches, but both would narrowly fall. However,
Sophia Felderman would add a critical win for the Dragons in number four singles with the true freshman defeating Ally Burger in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). After
Tiannah Gu defeated Nikita Agrawal at number five singles, MSUM secured the four team points needed to win the dual
Diaz Castillo leads the Dragons with eight singles wins so far this season, followed closely by Gu with seven. The pairing of Johnson and Diaz Castillo leads the roster with six wins in double play. MSUM is 5-2 overall heading into the Spring Break trip.
Alexis Konecne is in her third season as MSUM's head tennis coach.
