MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead tennis will take on Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State this weekend in NSIC action. The Dragons battle the Bulldogs on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. before taking on the Huskies at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Live video will be available at msumdragons.com. Both duals are scheduled to take place at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center in Duluth, Minn. The Dragons last competed on Saturday in a tough loss to UMary, 4-3.
The Marauders would set the tone of the match by sweeping doubles play and earning the coveted team point.
Sophia Felderman and
Tiannah Gu would see a spirited affair at the number two spot, but would fall 6-4. The same would be true for the Dragon team of
Claire Nemmers and
Katryna Hansen, who fell by the same count.
In singles action, the top three positions would need three sets to decide the match as a whole.
Shaelyn Johnson would fall in the first set to Chloe Chong Zhi Jing, but would storm back to claim a 6-4 win in set two. Zhi Jing would win the final set by a 6-3 count. At number three singles, Hansen would fall in the first set to Maria Estinvil before rallying for the second set, 6-4. Much like Johnson, Hansen would drop the final set by a 6-3 score.
Luzmary Diaz Castillo would grab a team point for the Dragons at the number two position, but it did not come without some game competition. Diaz Castillo claimed the first set (6-2), but would drop the second frame by a 6-2 score. However, Diaz Castillo would collect her 12th singles win of the season with a 6-2 result in set three against Ilona Freitag.
Felderman would continue MSUM's drive to four team points with a straight sets win over Anna Sueflohn in number four singles. The true freshman claimed the match, 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out the singles victories for the Dragons was
Tiannah Gu, who grabbed her 11th win of the season in a 6-1, 6-2 straight sets win over Valeria Bradley.
The team of Diaz Castillo and Johnson lead the roster with 11 doubles wins so far this season. Diaz Castillo also offers up a team-high 12 singles wins followed closely by Gu with 11. Felderman offers up nine singles win so far this season as Johnson has accumulated eight wins for the Dragons.
