WINONA, Minn. – MSU Moorhead softball lost an NSIC doubleheader to Winona State on Friday afternoon.
Winona State claimed game one by a 10-2 count in five innings before winning 11-0 in six innings in game two.
Game One
It was MSUM who would start the game off in jubilant fashion as
Avery Steffen got the offense going. Following a leadoff walk from
Jessie Henry, Steffen crushed a two-run home run to provide the Dragons a swift 2-0 lead. Winona State would tie the contest in the home half following an MSUM error. The Warriors would hold MSUM in check across the second and third before taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
As the Dragons would go down in order in the top of the fourth, Winona State would break the game open in the ensuing half inning. The Warriors plated six runs on six hits to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Winona State's outburst was highlighted by a pair of home runs.
The Dragons would be set down without a hit in the fifth before the Warriors buttoned up the game with a solo homer in the home half. The home team claimed the game 10-2 as Steffen's home run was the lone Dragon hit in the contest.
Game Two
Steffen would single to start the second game for the Dragons, but MSUM would fall victim to a double play to end the frame. After giving up a leadoff hit in the bottom half,
Brynna Farman would strand a runner in scoring position after three straight outs. Farman would hold the Warriors in check in the second and third innings as well, keeping the game scoreless. The junior would strand the bases loaded to get out of a jam in the bottom of the third.
MSUM would garner hits from
Lacey Camden and
Eliya Johnson in the third and fourth innings, but nothing would come across for the Dragons. Winona State's offense would take charge in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits and a detrimental three errors.
Natalie Gonzalez and
Mary Schmidt would single in the fifth inning for MSUM, but the Dragons would be held without a run once more.
Winona State would score two more runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 7-0.
Isabel Rodriguez would strand Warriors on the corners to push the game to the sixth inning. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Winona State would end the game on a grand slam, winning 11-0.
