WINONA, Minn. – Minnesota State Moorhead utilized double-double showings from
Timaris Brown and
Sam Hastreiter to push by Winona State on Saturday. The Dragons bested the Warriors, 83-79.
Isa El-Amin would jumpstart the Dragons, scoring five of MSUM's first seven points as part of a 7-0 run to open play. Winona State would balance out the early Dragon run behind three early longballs. The Warriors regained a 15-11 lead five minutes into the first half. Midway through the first half, Winona State led 21-15, using defense and rebounding to take Moorhead out of rhythm. Luckily for MSUM, the deficit would remain at six points despite being held without a field goal for over four minutes.
Sam Hastreiter would end the drought for MSUM, connecting on a three-pointer out of the media timeout to have the Dragons within a possession. Hastreiter would strike from deep again on the next possession to keep MSUM within three points. The flurry from deep would continue as
Timaris Brown tied the game at 24 points. On the ensuing offensive possession, Hastreiter would enter unconscious territory, burying another long range shot to give the Dragons a lead, forcing a Warrior timeout.
With under five minutes to play in the half, MSUM held a seven-point lead following four straight points from
Dominic Gooden. The Dragons would lead by as many as nine points before Winona State made a late push. Moorhead held a 42-38 halftime advantage thanks to 13 points from Hastreiter. The senior shot five of seven in the first half while Gooden added eight points for MSUM.
Rodrick Payne would keep the Dragons up five early in the second half, scoring his 1,000
th collegiate point in the process. Shortly thereafter, Winona State would regain control of the scoreboard, leading 57-51 with 15 minutes left. Brown would offer a strong response, scoring six straight to even the count once more. By the midway point of the half, Moorhead had regained the lead, 61-58. Brown would connect again not long after, this time from deep, to push MSUM's lead to seven points.
Brown only continued to surge as the half wore on. The senior netted his 16
th point of the game to have the Dragons up eight with less than five minutes to play. The Chicago, Ill., native was later fouled on a three-point attempt, sinking all three keep Moorhead up seven points. Winona State would rally back again, tying the game at 77 points with less than two minutes to go.
It was Hastreiter who showed up in crunch time for the Dragons, scoring on a savvy up-and-under maneuver, putting Moorhead up 79-77. Payne would score down low with under a minute remaining to push the Dragon lead to four points. The Dragons would go on to win 83-79 with Hastreiter and Brown each securing double-doubles. Brown scored 19 points to lead the Dragons while Hastrieter scored 16 in the game. Each player pulled down 10 rebounds in the Dragon victory.
