Ash and Terry's Big Score: Dynamic Duo Leads Dragons Past Huskies

Safranski logs triple-double while Johnson tallied her 1,000th career point

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball saw a monumental evening in a Friday night tilt with visiting St. Cloud State. Terryn Johnson scored 1,000th career point while Ashton Safranski logged the first recorded triple-double in program history as part of a 78-67 victory over the Huskies.

The Dragon strategy was clear in the early stages of the first quarter: feed the ball to Terryn Johnson. The senior came into the game 19 points shy of 1,000 for her career and would score seven quick points for Moorhead. With just over two minutes remaining in the first period, an Aubrey Morrison three-pointer would have MSUM up four points. Ashton Safranski would swish home a late three-pointer as the Dragons led 21-18 after one period behind seven points from Johnson.

Johnson would look to score again as the second quarter commenced, scoring four more points to push the Dragons in front by seven following an and-one. The Moorhead lead would be as large as nine points before St. Cloud State cut the deficit to four late in the half. After the Huskies tied the game at 36 points, Johnson would score her 18th point of the half off an assist from Safranski, her seventh. At the break, Moorhead led 38-36 behind Johnson's scoring outburst.

It would not take long for Johnson to surpass the 1,000-point barrier in the second half, netting an and-one which brought the Nemzek Fieldhouse crowd to its feet. After sinking the free throw, Johnson sat at 21 points and the Dragons led 42-38. It was Abby Berge who would take over from there, driving to the lane and getting opportunities at the charity stripe. By the end of the third period, both teams remained in stride with one another with MSUM leading 54-53. The opening minutes of the fourth quarter would see Safranski score her ninth point of the game, before doling out her 10th assist to Berge.

The Dragons would lead by eight points with six minutes to play following a pair of free throw makes from Berge. With just under five minutes to play, Safranski would score her 11th point of the contest at the charity stripe, putting Moorhead in front by eight points. Safranski would assist on a massive three-pointer from Karlee Fisher with three minutes to play, keeping the Dragons in front by eight points.

With Moorhead leading by nine points with just over 90 seconds to play, Safranski snared her 10th rebound on a Husky miss. The board secured a triple-double performance from the sophomore, the first ever recorded in Moorhead women's basketball history. MSUM would hold onto their lead as time expired as well, defeating the Huskies 78-67. Johnson finished the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds for her 26th career double-double. Berge added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Dragons in the victory.
