ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota State Moorhead men's basketball fell victim to a hot shooting Concordia-St. Paul team on Friday evening. The Dragons dropped an NSIC road contest to the Golden Bears, 102-89.
Concordia-St. Paul would open the scoring en route to a 15-10 lead early in the first half. A successful and-one from
Tysen Gerads would get the Dragons moving on offense. However, the Golden Bears shot four of five from the floor through five minutes of action to hold the lead. By the midway point of the half, CSP led be six points behind a 57.1 percent shooting clip. This included five made three-pointers through 10 minutes of action.
The Golden Bear lead would extend into double figures shortly thereafter despite nine early points from Gerads. The Avon, Minn., native opened the game shooting three of three from the floor for MSUM.
Timaris Brown would spark a Dragon run with a triple before
Sam Hastreiter and
Dominic Gooden followed suit on the next two possessions. The groove from deep helped pull Moorhead back within four points.
Before halftime, Concordia-St. Paul would move their lead back into double figures, carrying a 54-37 lead into the locker room. Gerads led the Dragons with his nine points while Gooden added six in the half. The Dragons shot 48 percent for the half, but the primary difference came from behind the arc. Concordia-St. Paul nailed 10 of 18 attempts through 20 minutes (55.6 percent). Compare that to MSUM's three makes in just five attempts.
Gerads would score four quick points to open the second half, pulling MSUM within 10 points. A Gooden triple would get Moorhead even closer as they would trail by five points near the midway point of the half. The Dragon defense would tighten up to help allow the comeback, holding the Golden Bears scoreless for over four minutes. Concordia-St. Paul would respond to regain a double figure advantage, 78-65, with seven minutes to play.
The Dragons would come as close as 10 points with two minutes to play following a three-pointer from
Isa El-Amin. However, the Golden Bears would stave off any comeback attempt, winning 102-89. El-Amin scored all 19 of his points in the second half with Gooden adding 17. Gerads finished the game with 15 points and six rebounds. The Golden Bears led for all but 45 seconds of the contest.
