JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball saw another cold shooting night in Thursday evening action against Jamestown. The Jimmies defeated the Dragons, 65-58.
Moorhead would jump out to a quick two-point lead before Jamestown hit on a 9-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. A three-pointer from
Abby Berge would snap the Jimmie run with MSUM pulling back within two points midway through the first period. Both squads would get some strong looks from deep not long after, but neither could convert as the first quarter waned. Berge and
Ashton Safranski would break the dry spell, placing the Dragons back in front, 13-11.
Five first-quarter points from Berge helped Moorhead to a 13-11 lead after 10 minutes. Moorhead held Jamestown scoreless for nearly the final six minutes of the frame. The teams combined to shoot two of 14 from three-point range to open the contest with the Dragons shooting 26.7 percent from the floor overall. A
Karlee Fisher three followed by a basket from
Caylin Kelly would jumpstart the Dragons early in the second quarter.
It would take until the 6:57 mark of the second quarter before the Jimmies broke their scoring drought. In total, Moorhead would hold Jamestown scoreless for nearly nine minutes. The Dragons would use that defense to hold a 20-13 lead after another make from Kelly. At the midway point of the quarter, MSUM led 25-13 thanks to more offense from Kelly as well as Safranski. The Jimmies would answer right back with an 11-0 run to pull within three points with three minutes to play in the half.
At the break, MSUM would hold a narrow 27-26 lead after being held without a basket for over three minutes. Kelly led the Dragons with eight points followed closely by Safranski with seven. For the half, Moorhead shot 33.3 percent from the floor, including a two of 13 mark from three-point range.
The home team would race out of the locker room, outscoring the Dragons 17-4 through the first seven minutes of the period. MSUM would whittle that deficit down to six points late in the quarter. Jamestown would lead by nine points after three quarters as the Jimmies shot 50 percent from the field with a trio of triples. The Dragons continued to struggle from the floor, shooting just 31.3 percent with five missed three-pointers in the period.
Both teams would go cold from the floor to begin the final 10 minutes of action with Jamestown holding a 50-43 lead. The Jimmies would push that advantage to 10 points with under five minutes to go. Safranski would drill a triple with under three to go to pull the Dragons within seven points once again. The sophomore would strike again, followed by a basket from
Grace Massaquoi and MSUM was within six points. However, the comeback attempt came a little too late as Jamestown would hang on, 65-58.
Safranski led MSUM with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kelly added 10 points for Moorhead, who shot 33.8 percent from the floor as a team. The Dragons shot four of 27 from three-point range in the loss.
