Dragons Travel for Spring Break Tennis in Florida

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead tennis will take its annual trip to Orlando, Fla., for the third week of Spring Break Tennis. The Dragons are scheduled to play three duals as part of the annual action.

Moorhead opens play against Northwood on Monday beginning at 11:30 a.m. before taking on St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday at 9 a.m. The Dragons conclude action in Florida on March 12 in a 10:30 a.m. dual against East Stroudsburg. MSUM (3-4, 2-2 NSIC) has not competed since picking up a pair of conference victories over UMary (4-3) and Jamestown (4-3) on February 21 and 22.

The Dragons At Spring Break Tennis...This season will mark the fourth time in five seasons where the Dragons will compete in Orlando as a part of Spring Break Tennis. Since the 2021-22 season, Moorhead is 7-7 in duals in Orlando, including tallying a 3-1 mark in the Sunshine State during the 2021-22 season. Last season, Moorhead collected victories over North Park and St. Catherine University as a part of Spring Break Tennis.

Bonini Breaks Through...Sophomore Camilla Bonini was a key factor in MSUM's two conference victories on February 21 and 22. Bonini sealed a 4-3 victory over UMary at number five singles in a resilient effort. The Rome, Italy, native dropped the first set to Maja Panganiban before rallying and scoring a three-set victory behind 7-5, 6-3 set scores. Bonini secured her second victory of the weekend against Jamestown, defeating Sydney Friesen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. So far this season, Bonini has six singles wins, the second-most on the team.

Kron Zone...True freshman Autumn Kron turned in a strong weekend of play for Moorhead against UMary and Jamestown. While Kron would fall in a narrow three-set match to the Marauders (which included two tiebreakers), she would respond positively against the Jimmies. Kron defeated Mykaela Jorgenson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 for her first career NSIC victory. The Cold Spring, Minn., native has three singles wins so far this season.

A Back And Forth Affair...Senior Luzmary Diaz Castillo and sophomore Sophia Felderman continue to lead the Dragons in both singles and doubles play. Both players bolster an 8-5 overall singles record so far this season. Felderman has begun the conference schedule with a 3-1 record, including two victories against UMary and Jamestown on February 21 and 22. The doubles duo has also proven themselves to be one of the best in the NSIC already, holding a 4-1 overall record and a 3-1 mark in conference competition.

Spring Break Tennis Opponents...For the first time in Moorhead's Spring Break Tennis history, it will play all NCAA Division II opponents this season. MSUM's matchups with Northwood and East Stroudsburg will be the first all-time meetings between the two programs. The Dragons took on St. Thomas Aquinas as a part of last season's Spring Break Tennis with the Spartans claiming a 4-3 victory despite MSUM winning the doubles point. At that time, St. Thomas Aquinas was ranked 44th in ITA's team rankings. This season, the Spartan doubles team of Sun Zhuoxuan and Kateryna Kryuchkova are ranked 34th in ITA's Division II doubles rankings.
