MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minnesota State Moorhead soccer had plenty of opportunity but could not quite find a score on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons fell at home in NSIC action to Southwest Minnesota State, 2-0.
Both squads would register a shot on goal through the first 10 minutes as midfielder
Sophie Thompson had a shot stalled in the seventh minute. Dragon goalkeeper
Emilia Bukholt Kristensen would make her first save not even a minute later.
Kaci Malo would have a strong try just ahead of the 20-minute mark, an attempt that was saved by Mustang keeper Madelyn Cory.
Neither team would have a strong look at the net until late in the first half. Southwest Minnesota State would test Kristensen on a pair of attempts ahead of the 37
th minute. The sophomore would make both saves to keep the scoreless tie.
Kadin Moles would have the period's final shot on goal, which was saved by Cory. The teams remained scoreless after 45 minutes.
Moorhead would come out aggressive in the second half, headlined by a rocket from
Mary Cox that hit the top crossbar.
Maggie Jenks would have a similar close call ahead of the 57
th minute. Jenks would find herself unattended, attempting a shot that required a team save from the Mustangs. Southwest Minnesota State would capitalize on some great passing to convert its first goal in the 69
th minute. Not even two minutes later, the visitors were on the board again in a similar fashion. With less than 20 minutes to play, MSUM trailed 2-0.
Moorhead would have two more shots on net thanks to Cox and
Erika Bergh, but the consecutive Mustang goals proved to be the difference. Southwest Minnesota State would capture the match 2-0 despite MSUM logging more total shots (19-12). The Mustangs had seven shots on net compared to Moorhead's six.
