Dragons Take Match From No.15 Wildcats

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. - Laura Tvrdik and Heidi Lensing combined for 31 kills as the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons volleyball team took a four-set match from the No. 15 Wayne State Wildcats on Saturday afternoon to wrap up regular season play (19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-20).

Tvrdik led the field in the match with 18 kills, hitting .400 and assisted on five blocks. Lensing had 13 kills while tallying two to her rookie season total of 55 block assists.

The teams traded points and a share of the lead until WSC led 17-15 in the first set. The Wildcats capitalized on a few Dragons errors to take a three point lead before MSUM took a time out. The team's traded points yet again and another time out was taken, but the stop created by the Dragons was not enough to quite their over-powerful arms that caused two more errors in the final three points of the set to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats took a 9-5 lead in the second set, on two kills a piece by each Tali Fredrickson, Jennifer Hefner and Shelby Schultz. The Dragons slowly began to climb back, aided by kills from Lensing and Kristen Kleven.

Back-to-back kills by Tvrdik tied the game at 13, and gave the Dragons the momentum to take the lead. The home team kept the lead or held a share of it until the set was finalized on another set of kills by Tvrdik. She had eight of her 18 kills in the second set.

The Dragons out-hit the Wildcats .196 to .036 in the third set, as seven MSUM athletes tallied a kill. Kleven played big defense in the middle of the set as she had three  block assists that took care of any Wildcat hope to begin a streak of points. She was helped out by Lensing on two of them and by Tvrdik on the other.

As the Dragons went in to the fourth set with a 2-1 lead, Mary Sussenguth served six points in a row to give the Dragons a 14-7 lead. During Sussenguth's streak, Keri Dowzak combined with Kleven on two blocks and had two kills. The Wildcats slowly crept back to within striking distance, coming to as close as two points at 21-19 but were stopped on kills by Kleven and Tvrdik, to move the lead back to four.

Kleven and Tvrdik combined for a block to put the Dragons at match-point 24-19. Tvrdik sealed the match win on her 18th kill.

Kleven led the Dragons with 10 block assists, it ties Sussenguth for the individual season match-high in blocks for 2009. She also had seven kills in the game. Ashley Pyfferoen had a team leading 26 digs in the match with seven kills and two service aces. Leigh Splittstoesser and Anna Olson had a 32-19 split in assists. Katy Ness had 23 digs while Andrea Rachel had 18.

MSUM finishes the regular season 21-12 overall and in sixth place in the league with an 11-9 conference record. The Dragons finish behind five nationally ranked teams that are all featured in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top-25. This is the fourth time in Head Coach Tammy Blake-Kath's career that her team has finished with 20+ wins.
