MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons returned home after a long road trip to face No. 8 St. Cloud State Huskies. The Dragons looked to pull off an upset as they faced their third nationally ranked opponent in a row. The Dragons fell short of their goal, losing 35-6.
The Dragons got an early win from junior
Derek Bomstad at 149 pounds. Bomstad gained a takedown of Jacob R. Horn at 2:12 and controlled the action until the 1:13 mark when Horn escaped. Bomstad chose down to start the second period and gained an escape at the 1:04 mark but was taken down with 19 seconds left in the period. Horn chose down to start the third and escaped just six seconds later. Bomstad would come up with a clutch takedown with six seconds left in the match and secured Horn long enough to gain a 5-4 win.
The Dragons would gain their second win when sophomore
Corey Ulmer gained his 16 win of the season over Trent Herold at 125 pounds. The action picked up in the third period when Ulmer chose down to begin the period. Ulmer reversed Herold 19 seconds into the period. Herold reversed the action at the 0:55 mark but Ulmer escaped and held on for the 4-2 win.
The loss drops the Dragons to 3-9 on the season (1-4 NSIC). The win brings the Huskies record to 10-6 on the season (2-1 NSIC). The Dragons will remain at home for the remainder of the regular season and take on cross-town rival Concordia Cobbers Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. inside Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
