BISMARCK, N.D. – The Dragons entered the top-20 rankings for the first time this season after being unranked in all previous polls this year. The newly ranked Dragons embarked faced off against the University of Mary (N.D.) Marauders before returning to Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Dragons took care of business and left the University of Mary with a 33-12 win.
The dual began at 149 pounds where
Tyler Steinwand earned a 7-4 win over Landon DellaSilva. Steinwand opened up the dual with a takedown and DellaSilva followed that up with an escape to give Steinwand a 2-1 lead after the first period. DellaSilva earned three escapes in the second period but Steinwand's reversal and takedown gave him the points to capture the win.
Trent Sovde backed up a loss at 165 pounds with a win at 174 pounds for the Dragons. Sovde worked over the Marauders' Kurt Wiedrich in the first two periods en route to a 10-6 win. Sovde gained a pair of takedowns in the first along with a three-point nearfall to lead 7-1 after the first. A takedown in the second would secure the win for Sovde over Wiedrich.
At 197 pounds
Brian Woelfel earned a fall at 2:37 of the first period to secure a momentum win for the Dragons. Senior
Jon Swart took that momentum and finished off the Marauders with a close 3-2 decision over Austin Woo. The Dragons also had 125-pounder
Corey Ulmer, 133-pounder
Evan Forde and 157-pounder
Tallen Wald all earn forfeit wins for the Dragons.
The No. 20 ranked Dragons 3-4 (1-1 NSIC) take their 33-12 win and will return home Thursday night to face off against the No. 7 ranked Mavericks of Minnesota State Mankato at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
