ABERDEEN, S.D. – Late decision wins aren't enough as the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestlers fell 28-12 to Northern State. The Dragons earned wins in four classes Friday night in Wachs Arena.
With the loss the Dragons fall to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Sun. Picking up decision wins on the night was
Eric Lehmann, No. 1
Corey Ulmer,
Connor MacGregor and
Tyler Steinwand. The Wolves grabbed the first three wins of the night followed by the Dragons taking four of the next seven matches.
Earning the first Dragon victory of the night was freshman
Eric Lehmann (10-9) in the 197 class. Lehmann fell behind early as the Wolves' Baker Haar earned two takedowns in the first period. Lehmann was able to escape Haar's first takedown and another in the second period. The Wahpeton, N.D. native pulled out the 7-4 decision comeback victory by grabbing a four-point nearfall. At that point in the night, the Dragons put their first points on the board and set the score at 10-3 in favor of the Wolves.
Two matches later,
Corey Ulmer (20-2) defended his No. 1 ranking for the first time against Anthony Bruno. The 125-pounder took Bruno to the mat twice in the first period followed by a two-point reversal in the second. After another reversal and yielding one point, Ulmer finished his first match at No. 1 by earning a 9-3 decision.
Connor MacGregor (5-15), the Dragons 141 starter, matched Ulmer's decision score while defeating Tyler Frost. The two entered the second period all tied up at two before MacGregor took control of the match. The sophomore earned a takedown, nearfall and reversal to set the final decision at 9-3 for the Dragon.
In the second to last match of the night,
Tyler Steinwand (10-9) earned the last Dragons win over Gavin Larsen. The Mandan, N.D. native scored the majority of his points in the first period while recording three takedowns and giving up three escapes. Larsen made a strong comeback but could not overcome Steinwand. The final decision score on the night would stand at 10-7. A last match pin in the first period solidified the Wolves 28-12 victory.
The Dragons next match comes on Wednesday, Feb. 15 against the Vikings of Augustana. The second to last dual of the season will be held in Moorhead, Minn. in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse with matches beginning at 7 p.m.
