FAYETTE, Iowa – Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestlers
Corey Ulmer and
Connor MacGregor earn victories Friday night while visiting Upper Iowa University. The Dragons (2-6, 1-4 NSIC) fell 37-7 in Fayette, Iowa to the Peacocks (9-1, 5-0 NSIC).
Graelin Garlington (0-9) opened action for the Dragons in the 133 class. Garlington took Trevor Franklin 1 minute and 30 seconds into the first period before Franklin put the Dragon on the mat and earned a pin victory.
Sophomore
Connor MacGregor (4-14) started in the 141-weight class and brought the Dragons within two points of the Peacocks. MacGregor showed his dominance over Blake Hilmer by winning the match in a 14-5 major decision.
The next seven matches were won by the Peacocks which set the scoring spread at 37-4. Nationally ranked
Corey Ulmer (19-2) took the mat in the final match of the night, against the only athlete ranked higher than him in the 125 class, Kyle Pedretti (16-3). Of the nine points scored in the match, Ulmer was able to score five. The 5-4 decision gave the No. 2 wrestler in the nation the upset victory over the No. 1. The second Dragons win on the night concreted the final score at 37-7 in favor of the home Peacocks.
The MSUM wrestlers take the mat again on Feb. 10 when they will face Northern State. The Dragons and Wolves will meet in Aberdeen, S.D. with matches beginning at 7 p.m.
