SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Freshman pitcher Katie Edison fired her first collegiate no-hitter to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team to a 3-0 win over the University of Sioux Falls in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. The second-game win helped MSUM gain a split on the day, as the Dragons lost an 8-7 heartbreaker in the opener.

Edison's no-hitter -- also her first collegiate shutout -- was the Dragons' first of the season and first one in several years. She struck out six and walked two. The only other baserunner for Sioux Falls reached on an error.

"She kept them off balance the whole day and threw really well," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said of Edison. "It was nice to get her some runs early to give her some support."

Offensively, sophomore Brittany York was 1-for-3 with a key two-run homer, while freshman Kristy Bruni was 1-for-3 with a homer. Sophomore Mollie Annen was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Rachel Sannicandro was 1-for-2. Senior Amanda Moore was 1-for-3.

MSUM got on the board right away in the first. With one out, Annen singled, and she scored when York homered to left, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the second when Bruni homered with one out. Bruni shares the team lead with sophomore Moriah Bruns with four homers.

That was plenty for Edison, who retired eight in a row at one point. No USF runner advanced past first in the game.

In a wild first game, Bruns had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with a homer and a career-high five RBI. Sophomore Mollie Annen was 1-for-4 with a homer, while York was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Kristen Nordby was not credited with an official at-bat -- she was walked and also hit by a pitch twice -- but scored three runs. Sannicandro was 1-for-2 as well.

Freshman Morgan Nybo took the loss, giving up eight runs (six runs) in six innings. She allowed 12 hits, striking out two while walking two.

USF held a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Dragons got on the board in the third. Nordby was hit by a pitch with one out, and moved to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Bruns singled up the middle to score Nordby, bringing MSUM within 4-1.

The Cougars got the run back in the third to push the lead to 5-1.

The tide turned in the fifth, when MSUM scored five times to take a 6-5 lead. With two out, Nordby was hit by a pitch, and Sannicandro followed with a single. Bruns crushed her fourth homer of the year to left field, a three-run shot, to bring MSUM within 5-4.

The next batter, Annen, hit her first homer of the season to tie the game at 5-5. York then followed with a triple to left, and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Dragons their first lead at 6-5. All five of the Dragon runs scored with two out.

A three-run homer in the sixth helped USF regain the lead at 8-6. In the seventh, Nordby walked, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sannicandro. Bruns singled up the middle to score Nordby, bringing MSUM within 8-7. Bruns represented the tying run at first, but a fly out and strike out ended the inning.

MSUM wraps up its season Sunday at Southwest Minnesota State. The doubleheader begins at noon in Marshall, Minn.
