WHAT'S AHEAD

MOORHEAD, Minn. --The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will wrap up the 2014 portion of its schedule this weekend with two home games on Saturday and Sunday. First, the Dragons will welcome Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State on Saturday. On Sunday, MSUM will conclude its nonconference schedule with Jamestown College.

MSUM dropped its first game of the season last Saturday at Minnesota Duluth, but remained in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Coaches poll at No. 19. The Dragons were slipped five spots from 14 to 19 in the latest edition of the poll.

Saturday's game will be televised live on WDAY'Z Xtra, which is cable channel 596 on Midcontinent Communications cable, channel 29 on Cable One, and 6.3 over the air. Dragon broadcaster Steve d'Eustachio and Scott Swanson will ahve the call. Live stats, live online video stream, and audio for both games can be found at msumdragons.com.

First off, MSUM will take on its NSIC travel partner in Northern State on Saturday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the completion of the women's game. In 91 meetings between the two programs, the Wolves hold the advantage in the all-time series at 62-29. The Wolves and Dragons have split the last 10 games right down the middle. MSUM grabbed a victory over the Wolves earlier this season 75-55 on Nov. 29 in Aberdeen, S.D. The Dragons had five players score in double digits and shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field in the 20-point rout of the Wolves. Junior forward Isaac Sevlie led the way for the Dragons with 17 points. The Nov. 29 loss is the only blemish on Northern State's 10-1 record this season, as they enter Saturday's matchup with a five game winning streak. Last week, the Wolves defeated Minnesota Duluth 58-50 and St. Cloud State 91-77. Senior forward Seth Bachand has been a leader for the Wolves this season, averaging 13.6 points per game. Banchand leads the NSIC in rebounds per game at 9.2.

Next, the Dragons will welcome Jamestown College to Moorhead for a nonconference matchup on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated 2 p.m. The all-time series between the two schools is currently tied, with both teams owning 35 wins over the other team. Last season, the two teams squared off on Nov. 26, 2013, when the Dragons blew out the Jimmies 93-69. Then-sophomore guard Tyler Vaughan scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field in the victory. The Jimmies are currently 8-5 on the season and will face Minot State on Saturday night before traveling to Moorhead. Recently, Jamestown routed Oglala Lakota College 126-60 on Dec. 7 and Trinity Bible College 93-63 on Dec. 9. Junior guard Brequan Tucker has been the go-to guy for the Jimmies this season, averaging 21.2 points per game while grabbing 4.2 rebounds and dishing out 3.5 assists per game. Tucker scored 13 points and had three asissts in the game against MSUM last season.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK

The Dragons added two victories to its record last week over Mayville State on Monday and St. Cloud State on Friday before dropping its first game of the season to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. The 12-0 start to the season was the best start to a season for the Dragons since 2011-12 when the team started 11-0 and finished 21-10, advancing to the NCAA regional tournament.

On Monday night, senior guard Jordan Riewer and sophomore guard Aaron Lien led the Dragons to a 75-59 victory over Mayville State. Riewer scored 24 points and shot 6-of-8 from beyond the three-point line. Lien recorded the first double-double of his career when he scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

MSUM sank 32-of-39 free throws including 11-of-12 in the final two minutes of the game to defeat St. Cloud State 98-85 on Friday night. Riewer led the team with 19 points and four assists while junior guard Tyler Vaughan led the team with nine rebounds and three steals, contributing 16 points in the victory.

The Dragons couldn't find the bottom of the net in Duluth, Minn. on Saturday night, shooting 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field and 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from the three-point line in a 60-58 loss to Minnesota Duluth. The Dragons forced 12 Bulldogs turnovers and committed just four of their own. Junior forward Isaac Sevlie had 18 points and five rebounds for MSUM.

LIEN NOTCHES FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE

•Sophomore guard Aaron Lien had one of his best games as a Dragon on Dec. 8 in a 77-59 win over Mayville State. The Moorhead, Minn. native recorded the first double-double of his career, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds was also a career high for Lien.

•Lien has been a solid contributor in his second season at MSUM, ranking second in scoring for the Dragons with 12.7 points per game and leading the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.

•The 6-4 guard has been a sharp-shooter in the Dragon lineup, shooting 53.1 percent from the field, 52.7 percent from the three-point line, and 76.2 percent from the free throw line. The 52.7 mark from beyond in the arc is fifth best in the NSIC.

FREE THROWS CLINCH VICTORY

•The Dragons were clutch from the free throw line in the win over St. Cloud State on Friday night, sinking 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to clinch a 98-85 victory.

•MSUM was 82 percent from the line, converting 32-of-39 from the charity stripe. The 32 makes and 39 attempts are the most in a game for MSUM this season and the most since February 15, 2014 when MSUM went 38-of-49 in a 95-84 victory at Wayne State.

•Four Dragons were prefect from the line on the night, with senior guard Jordan Riewer leading the way, going 8-of-8. Senior guard Prescott Williams and junior guard Ngijol Songolo each went 4-of-4 while junior forward Isaac Sevlie hit the two free throws he attempted.

•Junior guard Tyler Vaughan was 7-of-11 in the game while sophomore guard Aaron Lien was 5-of-6.

RIEWER NEARS MILESTONES

•Senior guard Jordan Riewer is nearing two milestones that will leave a lasting legacy in Dragon history. The Dragon point guard is 51 points away from having 1,000 points in his career and is 25 assists away from holding the all-time record for assists in MSUM basketball history. Currently, Riewer has 949 points and 315 assists in his career.

•Riewer would be the 27th player in Dragon history to reach the 1,000-point club and the first since Alex Novak entered the exclusive club in 2013 with 1,219 points.

•The 6-2 guard would pass Ralph Western's mark of 339 assists with 25 more this season. Western posted the record in 116 games between 1988 and 1992.

•The Staples, Minn. native leads MSUM in points per game (15.4), assists per game (5.1), and free throw percentage (.933).
