WHAT'S AHEAD...

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will host the Concordia College Cobbers Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in its home opener.

The Cobbers are 1-0 on the year after defeating the University of Minnesota-Morris last weekend, 92-65. Concordia was picked to finish sixth in the MIAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll as they return a talented senior trio in Tom Fraase, Brady Syverson and two-time All-MIAC selection Jordan Bolger. Bolger led the team in eight categories last year including points (323) and rebounds (168). Fraase finished the year last year averaging 10.1 points per game (.454), including shooting .462 from beyond the arc while Syverson had 0.5 blocked shots per game and 9.2 points per game. Head coach Rich Glas is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cobber program.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK...

Last weekend the Dragons travelled to Russellville, Ark. where they swept two tough competitors in Harding University and Arkansas Tech. Both games went into overtime and were decided by a combined score of four points. The Dragons defeated Harding 83-81 and Arkansas Tech 80-78.

In Friday's game, sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman hit a basket at the buzzer to lift the No. 9-ranked Dragons over Harding during the GAC/NSIC Crossover in Russellville, Ark.

The Dragons led by as many as 15 in the first half and trailed by as many as 19 in the second half before mounting a furious comeback to get the game to overtime. Kretchman hit the game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation and followed with the game-winner minutes later.

Senior forward Isaac Sevlie had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead MSUM while senior guard Tyler Vaughan had 15 points and a game-high eight assists.
MSUM shot 45 percent (27-of-60) for the game, compared to 42.9 percent (30-of-70) for Harding.

Trailing 61-42 with 8:38 left, MSUM stormed back into the game with a 20-1 run over the next four minutes to climb within 63-62. Ayob had seven points during that run while Sevlie had six. Edwards and Lien also buried threes to spark the comeback.

The Dragons regained the lead at 68-67 with 1:10 left after Sevlie scored.  Harding led for almost the rest of regulation and held a 73-70 lead in the final seconds.
With six seconds left, Kretchman buried a three to tie the game at 73-73. Sevlie blocked a potential game-winning shot by Harding to send the game to overtime.
Harding battled back to tie the game at 81-81 in overtime after a John Hudson three-pointer with four seconds left. Kretchman was the hero for the Dragons, converting the basket as time expired to give MSUM the two-point win.

Saturday night promised to be another great matchup as the Dragons faced tournament host Arkansas Tech.

A basket by junior forward Isaac Sevlie with five seconds left proved to be the game-winner the Dragons edged ATU, 80-78 in overtime.

Sevlie was named the classic's Most Valuable Player after recording 43 points in the two Dragon wins. Junior guard Aaron Lien was also named to the all-tournament team.

Senior guard Ngijol Songolo had 19 points to pace MSUM, while Sevlie had 18 points and eight rebounds. Lien had 12 points, while senior guard Tyler Vaughan had five points, nine rebounds and five assists.

MSUM shot 42 percent (29-of-69) compared to 32.9 percent (27-of-82) for Arkansas Tech.  Arkansas Tech had a 59-46 edge in rebounds.

The Dragons led 61-58 with 4:37 left but scored eight of the next nine points to push the lead to 69-59 with 1:24 left in regulation. Sevlie had four points during that run while sophomore Tanner Kretchman and Songolo added baskets.

The Wonder Boys mounted a furious rally in the final 1:24 and tied the game at 72-72 with six seconds left when Marquis Yates buried a three. The Dragons had a shot to win the game in the final seconds but it wouldn't fall, sending the game to overtime.

MSUM faced a 75-72 deficit early in the overtime frame but scored five points in a row – including a three by Lien – to take a 77-75 lead. Arkansas Tech regained the lead at 78-77, but Sevlie's basket with five seconds left gave the Dragons a one-point lead. A free throw with one second left by Sevlie pushed the lead to 80-78, and the Wonder Boys were unable to get a shot off in the final second.

MSUM led 32-27 at halftime despite shooting only 35.5 percent in the first half. Songolo's seven points led the way.

The second half was close for much of the way until the Dragons pushed the lead to double digits in the final two minutes.
