CLERMONT, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team belted out a season-high 15 hits to record a wild 15-10 win over Bridgeport in nonconference action Monday in Clermont, Fla. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as the Dragons fell to Minot State, 8-0 in five innings to open their day.

The Dragons are 6-4 on the season after the split.

The MSUM-Bridgeport game saw the teams combine for 25 runs and 30 hits.

Sophomore left fielder Carly Williamson had a huge game, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Junior pitcher Morgan Nybo also came up big offensively for MSUM, going 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a grand slam to break the game open in the eighth inning. Senior shortstop Taylor Huss was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, while senior center fielder Mollie Annen was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore right fielder Hannah Klug was 2-for-6 with an  RBI, while senior catcher Brittany York, junior pitcher Kristen Nordby, sophomore second baseman Jill Fox and sophomore first baseman Lauren Meeker each had hits. Meeker, York and Nordby had RBI.

Nybo relieved Nordby after one inning and got the win with seven solid innings of work. She struck out four and walked one, allowing four runs (three earned).

"Morgan had a huge game against Bridgeport," MSUM head coach Kelsey Fehl said. "She pitched well and came up with that huge grand slam in the eighth for us."

The game was tied at 8-8 after seven innings.  The international tiebreaker was used, putting a runner on second to lead off the eighth inning.

Annen was placed on second and moved to third on a single by Klug. York singled to left to score Annen, breaking the tie and giving MSUM a 9-8 lead. Huss was intentionally walked to load the bases. Nordby walked to force in a run, giving the Dragons a 10-8 lead.

Nybo then delivered with the first grand slam of her collegiate career to push the lead to 14-8.

The Dragons weren't done, as Williamson singled with two out. On the hit, she moved to second on an error in left. Annen singled to center to score Williamson, giving MSUM a 15-8 lead.

Bridgeport got within 15-10 in the bottom of the eighth but Nybo struck out Jade Blair looking to end the game, giving MSUM the five-run win.

MSUM scored five times in the top of the first, using five hits to take an early 5-0 lead. Annen led off by being hit by a pitch, and Klug singled. One out later, Huss crushed a three-run homer to center, giving MSUM the 3-0 lead. Nordby walked, and one out later, Fox singled. Meeker doubled to left to score Nordby, and Williamson singled to score Fox to push the lead to 5-0.

Bridgeport answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 lead.

The Dragons tied the game in the third when Williamson's RBI single scored Fox, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

MSUM regained the lead in the fifth. Meeker reached on an error with one out. Williamson singled, allowing senior Rachel Sannicandro, who was pinch-running for Meeker, to move to second. Annen singled to left to score Sannicandro, putting MSUM in front 7-6. Williamson scored on Klug's fielder's choice to make it 8-6.

Bridgeport tied the game at 8-8 with a two-run homer in the sixth. The game stayed that way until the eighth inning when MSUM scored seven times.

Against Minot, earlier in the day the Dragons were outhit 14-3. Huss, Nybo and freshman third baseman Sydney Beck all had hits for the Dragons. Nybo took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in four innings.

MSUM's best threat was in the first inning. With two outs, York walked, and Huss followed with a single to center. A fly out ended the threat for MSUM, however.

"We couldn't find a way to produce offensively against Minot," Fehl said.

The Dragons will face a pair of nonconference foes on Tuesday in Clermont. MSUM opens against Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Central time and concludes with a game against the New York Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. CT.
