CLERMONT, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team stretched its winning streak to three with a pair of wins on Tuesday. The Dragons beat Wesleyan, 8-0 in five innings and then beat the New York Institute of Technology 3-1 to complete a 2-0 day.
MSUM (8-4) is now 6-2 on its Florida trip with two games remaining.
In the win over Wesleyan, junior pitcher
Morgan Nybo fired a three-hit shutout, striking out four while walking one.
At the plate, senior center fielder
Mollie Annen was 2-for-2 with three runs scored while junior designated hitter
Kristen Nordby was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior shortstop
Taylor Huss was 2-for-3 with an RBI while sophomore first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-3. Sophomore second baseman
Jill Fox was 1-for-3 with an RBI while junior
Kristy Bruni had a solo homer. Sophomore left fielder
Carly Williamson also had hits.
"We had solid pitching and we were productive offensively," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "It was a good team win."
MSUM jumped out quickly against Wesleyan. Annen doubled to lead off the game, and moved to third on a single by Fox. One out later, Huss singled up the middle to score Annen with the game's first run. Nordby hit a sacrifice fly to score Fox as MSUM built a 2-0 lead.
The Dragons added two more runs in the second. Bruni led off with a solo homer, her first of the year. With two out, Annen doubled and scored when Fox's grounder was misplayed at short as the lead grew to 4-0.
The MSUM lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth. Meeker and Williamson had singles, and Annen walked to load the bases. Fox hit a sacrifice fly to score senior
Rachel Sannicandro, who was pinch running for Meeker. York also hit a sacrifice fly to score Williams, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Annen scored on an error and Nordby ripped an RBI double to make it 8-0, which was more than enough for Nybo, who didn't allow a runner past second base.
In the win over NYIT, York was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Bruni was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Annen, Fox, Huss, Nybo and Williamson had hits.
Nybo picked up her second win of the day, giving up three hits and one earned run. She walked two.
"We played a great game defensively and Morgan threw two great games today," Fehl said. "We came up with a few key hits to score some runs."
NYIT took a 1-0 lead after two innings before MSUM came back with two runs in the third. With one out, Annen walked and moved to second on a groundout. York delivered a huge two-out hit, a two-run homer, to give MSUM a 2-1 lead.
MSUM added an insurance run in the fifth when Bruni's RBI single scored
Brittany York to make it 3-1. The Dragons finished with a 7-3 advantage in hits in the game.
The Dragons wrap up their Florida trip on Wednesday. They will face Wayne State (Mich.) at 2 p.m. Central time and then face St. Michael's College at 4 p.m. CT.
