WHAT'S AHEAD...
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The No. 10-ranked Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will host the Wildcats of Wayne State College on Wednesday for the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health men's basketball tournament. The game is slated to begin at 8 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.Â
The game will be televised live on WDAY'Z Xtra with Steve d'Eustachio and Jared Bledsoe on the call. The game will also be broadcast live online at msumdragons.com.Â
The Wildcats are the No. 8-seed out of the south division of the NSIC while the Dragons are the No. 1-seed out of the north half of the conference. WSC is 5-23 on the season and 3-19 in the conference. In their previous meeting this year, the Dragons defeated the Wildcats by a score of 84-72 on Feb. 5. Wayne State holds a 17-6 all-time series lead over MSUM. The Wildcats are coached by Brian Dolan who is in his third season at the helm of the program.Â
WSC is averaging 74.2 points per game while giving up 84.2. They have 32.7 rebounds per game and 13.1 assists while averaging 5.4 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. The Wildcats are led by Matt Thomas's 16.5 points and 2.9 steals per game. Adam Moon has 9.7 points and 4.9 boards per game while Jordan Corneluis averages 9.5 points and 1.9 assists per game on the year.
A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK...
Friday evening the Dragons opened their final homestand of the regular season hosting Bemidji State where MSUM dominated the second half, outscoring Bemidji 47-15 over the final 20 minutes to roll to a 93-59 win over the Beavers. Senior center Isaac Sevlie led all scorers with 25 points including four monster dunks accompanied by six blocks and five rebounds. Junior guard Aaron Lien had 16 points, nine boards and three steals for the Dragons while senior guard Tyler Vaughan added 15 points, seven boards and six assists. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman had 13 points and seven assists while junior forward Ayob Ayob added eight points. The Dragons shot 52.1 percent from the field going 38-of-73 and grabbed 41 rebounds while the Beavers shot 36.9 percent on the game, just 20.69 percent in the second half and grabbed 40 boards. MSUM got 16 points from the bench and 18 second chance points.Â
Saturday night the Dragons wrapped up the regular season with an 80-46 victory over Minnesota Crookston. MSUM recognized five seniors as part of Senior Day: Ryan Benoy, Evan Holt Ngijol Songolo, Tyler Vaughan, Isaac Sevlie. All five were recognized before the game. The Dragons were led by senior center Isaac Sevlie's double double of 21 points and 10 boards while senior guard Tyler Vaughan added 12 points, four boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Tanner Kretchman had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists and freshman center Addison Park added 10 points and seven boards. MSUM shot 52.5 percent from the field on the game and 41 percent from beyond the arc while UMC shot 29.5 percent from the field and a devastating 5 percent from three-point range. The Dragons grabbed 49 rebounds compared to 28 from the Golden Eagles.
KRETCHMAN FIRST IN THE NATION
Guard Tanner Kretchman continues to impress and improve during his sophomore season. After his play this weekend, Kretchman leads the nation in assist-turnover ratio at 4.00. Kretchman also is ranked seventh in the nation in total assists with 168 total assists on the year.Â
The Fargo, N. D. native began the season coming off the bench but earned himself a spot in the starting lineup and has been a force for the Dragons.Â
