CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior pitcher
Kristen Nordby fired a two-hit shutout to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team earn a 5-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas in nonconference action Saturday in Clermont, Fla. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as the Dragons fell to a strong Grand Valley State team, 6-1 to open the day.
MSUM is now 3-5 on the year. St. Thomas Aquinas is 1-4 while Grand Valley State is 14-2.
Nordby improved to 2-1 on the season with a complete game shutout. She allowed two hits, walking three while striking out six. It is Nordby's first complete-game shutout of the year and second of her career.
Junior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-2 with two RBI, while junior third baseman
Kristina Villalobos was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop
Sydney Beck was 1-for-2 while senior left fielder
Kristy Bruni, junior third baseman
Jill Fox and freshman third baseman Morgan Anderson each had hits for the Dragons.
"We did a good job of bouncing back from the first game to win the second," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "Kristen threw a great game and we put the ball in play and got some big two-out hits."
The Dragons scored four times in the first and kept that lead throughout. With one out, freshman shortstop Taylor Roddie was hit by a pitch. One out later, Bruni singled to left. Meeker delivered a huge two-out hit for MSUM, ripping a double to score freshman Aunica Novacek (who was pinch running for Roddie) and Bruni, giving MSUM a 2-0 lead.
Villalobos then stepped up and homered to center to score Meeker, pushing the lead to 4-0.
MSUM added an insurance run in the sixth when Anderson, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored on an error.
That was plenty for Nordby, who never allowed a runner to reach third base in the game.
Against Grand Valley, Meeker was 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Junior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 1-for-2 while Fox was 1-for-3.

The Dragons committed five errors in the game which led to three unearned runs for Grand Valley, which improved to 14-2 and has two wins over foes ranked in the top 25 this season.
MSUM resumes on Sunday in Clermont against Pace (8 a.m. Central time) and Mercy (12 p.m. CT).
