Dragon Softball Continues Busy Stretch With 3 Doubleheaders This Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team has a busy week ahead with three doubleheaders in a span of five days. MSUM will play at Mary for a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Bismarck, N.D., on Wednesday, and then return home to host Minnesota State (Saturday) and Concordia-St. Paul (Sunday) for doubleheaders this weekend.

The Dragons are 8-18 overall and 1-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. They went 1-5 on the road last week, highlighted by a 5-4 win at Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader.

Senior Kristy Bruni leads MSUM in batting average (.338), doubles (seven), RBI (15) and slugging percentage (.532). Senior Kristen Nordby is hitting .303 with three homers and seven RBI. Juniors Lauren Meeker and Kristina Villalobos each have two homers for MSUM. Junior Carly Williamson leads with five stolen bases.

On the mound, senior Morgan Nybo is 3-10 with a team-best 3.88 ERA in 70.1 innings. She leads with 50 strikeouts. Nordby is 4-7 with a 4.33 ERA. Nybo and Nordby each have a complete-game shutout this season.

Kelsey Fehl is in her sixth season as MSUM's head coach.

About Mary:
The Marauders are 7-21 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC. They went  1-5 in NSIC games last week with a 2-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State on April 3 accounting for the win. Junior Taylor Mendez is hitting .400 for the Marauders with six homers and 16 RBI, while senior Alana Norman is hitting .386. junior Shawnee Zink is hitting .312 with five homers and 17 RBI. As a team, the Marauders are hitting .271 with 16 homers and 87 RBI through 28 games. On the mound, MeLanie Rodriguez leads the way with a 3-10 record and 5.01 ERA in 72.2 innings. Kerry Shaw is in his first season as Mary's head coach.

About Minnesota State: Minnesota State is 27-9 overall and 10-2 in the NSIC. The Mavericks, who face Upper Iowa prior to facing MSUM, enter the week on a six-game winning streak. McKenzie Paap leads the Mavericks with a .427 average while Dana Mogren is hitting .409 with eight doubles, three triples, four homers and 34 RBI. Minnesota State is hitting .335 as a team with 14 homers and 158 RBI. On the mound, Coley Ries is 15-4 with a 1.31 ERA in 123 innings. She has 227 strikeouts.  Lori Meyer is in her 32nd season as the MSU head coach with a record of 1,076-634-3 at the school.

About Concordia: Concordia, which faces Winona State and Northern State prior to facing MSUM, is 11-21 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears went 4-2 last week, sweeping Minnesota Crookston while splitting with Southwest Minnesota State and Bemidji State. Thompson leads Concordia with a .442 average while Schattner is hitting .398 with four homers and 35 RBI. As a team Concordia is hitting .273 with 16 homers and 143 RBI in 32 games. On the mound Linzy Heim is 8-10 with a 6.25 ERA in 115.1 innings. She has 61 strikeouts. Bob Bartel is in his 12th season as the Concordia head coach with a record of 350-277 at the school.
