MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team will travel to West St. Paul, Minn., for the Dragon-Beaver Battle. The Dragons will play three non-conference games, and one exhibition game at the event. All games will be held at the West St. Paul Dome.
MSUM (1-3) will face Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m. on Monday and then face Anoka-Ramsey in an exhibition game at 3 p.m. On Tuesday MSUM faces Bemidji State at 9 a.m. and Minnesota Crookston.
MSUM is 1-3 so far in nonconference games.
About the Dragons
The Dragons are coming off their first tournament of the season, the Minot State Tournament in Aberdeen, S.D., where they went 1-3, with a win over Minnesota Crookston, as well as a loss to Crookston, Minot State, and Black Hills State.
Against Black Hills State, freshman
Madison Paige led the Dragons, going 2-4 with two rbi's and one home run. Senior
Carly Williamson went 1-4, while sophomore
Aunica Novacek went 1-3. In the second game of the day, the Dragons defeated Minnesota-Crookston behind a home run from Paige and a home run from freshman
Emma Dummer.
On the second day, the Dragons lost to Crookston 5-3, and lost to Minot State 6-2. In those games, the Dragons were led by
Carly Williamson, who was 3-for-7.
Dummer is hitting .444 with a homer and an RBI, while Paige is hitting .429 with two homers and five RBI. Williamson is hitting .400.
On the mound
Becky Volkert is 1-0 with an 0.81 ERA to lead the young pitching staff.
Kelsey Fehl is in her sixth season as the MSUM head coach.
About the Golden Eagles
Minnesota Crookston is 3-5 on the season, with wins over Dakota Wesleyan University, MSUM, and Black Hills State. The Golden Eagles are led by Haley Fitzpartick, who is 5-10 on the season. Their lone home run came from Maggie NMorales, also has three doubles on the season to lead the Golden Eagles. Bailey Braatz is the top pitcher, with a 2-2 record and a 3.50 ERA, both of which lead the team.
About the Beavers
This will be the first games of the season for Bemidj State, who finished last season 33-19, with a 14-11 conference record. Their season came to an end in the NSIC tournament when they lost to Southwest Minnesota State 4-2. Sophomore Kelsey McAllister looks to lead the Beavers, as she led them in batting average last season with a .376 average. Senior Jessica Yost looks to be the top pitcher, as she went 13-8 with a 1.91 ERA.
