MARSHALL, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team's offense broke through with three goals on its way to a 3-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State Sunday in Marshall, Minn.
MSUM is now 1-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while SMSU fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the league. The Dragons went 1-0-1 on the weekend after tying Sioux Falls on Saturday.
SMSU scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Dragons scored three unanswered goals to take the win.
The Dragons were trailing 1-0 when junior defender
Kendall Schauer scored off of an assist from junior defender
Kylee Billings at the 25:06 mark. The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, senior defender
Jenai DeNardo scored an unassisted goal to put the Dragons up 2-1 at the 64:04 mark and sophomore defender
Lindsey Brownell scored off of junior midfielder
Jessica Dallman's corner kick to make it 3-1.
"I'm super proud of our team for coming back and giving our all," Brownell said. "It's super exciting to see how far our team has come already and that both center backs (Kendall and I) scored which is not something that you see every day on the soccer field."
Senior goalkeeper
Reagan VonBerge had seven saves in net for the Dragons.
"It's so difficult to play back-to-back games. Head athletic trainer
Andrea Scott has done a great job keeping the players healthy," MSUM head coach
Christie Kopietz said. "Assistant coaches
Michelle Martinez,
Katelyn Tallas and
Nicole Lograsso have brought a lot of knowledge to the team which i feel has only boosted our level of play. The players were tremendous this weekend because of their effort and grit which shows our character and resilience to come back after being down 1-0 in both games."
MSUM makes its 2017 regular-season home debut on Friday against Minnesota Duluth. Game time is 3 p.m. in Moorhead.
