Dragon Volleyball Travels to Take on Upper Iowa and Winona State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team is now 7-4, 2-1 NSIC after opening up conference play this past week. The Dragons picked up their first pair of conference wins against Minot State, 3-0, and U-Mary, 4-1, before falling to No. 19-ranked Northern State, 3-0, in their home opener. This week MSUM will travel south to take on Upper Iowa, Fri. at 6 p.m. and No. 9-ranked Winona State, Sat. at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Opposition...
Upper Iowa University

The Peacocks are 10-2, 1-2 NSIC. Their losses have been against No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul (3-1) and No. 9-ranked Winona State (3-1). The Peacocks leading hitter is Anna Winter, who is averaging 3.35 kills per set. Haley Weepie has 121 kills, while Haley Poula has 94.  Setter Malissa LeClaire has 379 set assits so far this season, averaging 8.81 assists per game. The top blocker is Bethany Lovhaug, who has 42 total blocks, averaging 0.98 blocks per game. The Peacocks are led by head coach Aaron Nelson, who is in his seventh season as head coach. The Dragons lead the all-time series 14-5 against Upper Iowa. The last time the two teams met,  MSUM defeated the Peacocks, 3-1

No. 9 Winona State University
The Warriors are  8-3, 2-1 NSIC on the season. Their lone NSIC loss was to No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul. Previously, WSU had been on a seven-match win streak. Their top attacker is Danielle Rampart, who is averaging 3.58 kills per set. Setter McKenna Larsen has dished out 388 assists and is averaging 10.78 per set. Maria Wrage leads the team with 27 toal blocks, averaging .71 blocks per set. Becca Pagel leads the back row defense with 218 digs, averaging 5.45 digs per set. Rampart has 123 digs, while Larsen has 120. The Warriors are led by head coach Joe Getzin, who is in his third season as the head coach. The Dragons lead the all-time series 62-32, however the last time they played each other, the Warriors won 3-0.

Vega Keeps Digging
Monica Vega, who recently passed the 1,000 career did mark this season, added 50 more digs in the last three games. The junior libero is only 212 digs away from reaching 10th all-time leader. Vega is third inthe conference for digs, totaling 214 on the season, averaging 5.35 per set.

Kanwischer Earns NSIC Defensice Player of the Week
Freshman middle blocker Kylie Kanwischer earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors after an NSIC high of 15 total blocks in the Dragons two wins over Minot State and U-Mary last week. She Averaged an NSIC hgh of 2.14 blocks per set. Kanwischer had a career high of 10 block assists in the 3-1 win over U-Mary, and a career high of 11 total blocks. The freshman is third in the NSIC, averaging 1.18 blocks per set.

Dragons to Face Tough Slate This Season
MSUM's 28-game 2017 schedule features seven matches against teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top-25, five of which are in the top-10. The Dragons play No. 1 Concordia - St. Paul, No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, No. 5 Winona State, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, No. 10 Augustana, No. 13 Winona State and No. 24 Northern State.

Oh Captain, My Captain
Minnesota State University Moorhead announced its captains for the 2017 season. Junior libero/defensive specialist Monica Vega, sophomore middle blocker Sarah Hagler and senior outside hitter Tyann Caspers will be MSUM's captains.

Blake Braces for 23rd Season
Head coach Tammy Blake enters her 23rd season as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball program. Since taking over in Moorhead, Blake has lead MSUM to three NSIC championships and three NCAA appearances. Bob Jones and Madison Halterman are both in their second season as assistant coaches.

MSUM will return home for a four game home stand where they will take on Concordia St-Paul Sept. 29 at 6 p.m., Minnesota State-Mankato Sept. 30 at 3 p.m., Southwest Minnesota State Oct. 6 at 6 p.m., and will wrap up with Sioux Falls Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.
