Dragon Men Return Home to Host Mustangs and Cougars

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team (5-15, 3-11 NSIC) will return home to host Southwest Minnesota State University and University of Sioux Falls.

THIS WEEKEND...
The Dragons return home to take on Southwest Minnesota State, Friday at 8 p.m., before facing Sioux Falls, Saturday at 6 p.m.

LOOKING BACK...
MSUM fell to both Minnesota Duluth (83-74) and St. Cloud State (69-55) last weekend on the road.

In the Dragons' loss to the Bulldogs, Travaun Coad had career high 26 points and 14 rebounds, making it his fifth consecutive double-double. Sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga scored 15 points, while senior guard Tanner Kretchman had 11 points and three assists.

Against St. Cloud State, Coad scored a team-high 13 points and added seven rebounds. Beeninga added 12 points and four assists, Kretchman had nine points. Addison Park added eight points and four rebounds to the Dragons efforts.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION...
Southwest Minnesota State University

The Mustangs bring a 14-6 overall record and a 10-4 NSIC record into the weekend. Last weekend they split a pair of games, defeating Concordia-St. Paul, 79-64 before falling to Minnesota State Mankato, 72-70. SMSU is led by Ryan Bruggeman, who is averaging 16.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Carter Kirk leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game, while averaging 14.4 points per game. Bruggeman also holds a team-best and NSIC-best in steals, averaging 1.8 per game. As a team, Southwest Minnesota State averages 79.8 points per game while holding its opponents to 73.8 points. Brad Bigler is in his ninth season as head coach of the Mustangs, with a record of 136-101.

University of Sioux Falls
The Cougars enter the weekend 13-7 overall and 8-6 in the NSIC. They went 1-1 last weekend falling to Minnesota State Mankato (99-82) before defeating Concordia-St. Paul (85-64). USF is  led by Drew Guebert, who is averaging 20.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Trevon Evans is right behind him, averaging 20.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Jerrod Walton enters the weekend averaging 14.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Evans also leads the Cougars averaging 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Sioux Falls is averaging 80.5 points per game while holding its opponents to 73.8 points.  Chris Johnson is in his 10th season as head coach of the Cougars with a record of 156-122.

Kretchman Breaks Records

Senior Tanner Kretchman became the all-time career assist leader earlier this season in MSUM's victory over Northern Michigan. Kretchman now has 531 career assists. For the first time in the school's history Kretchman has posted back-to-back seasons with at least 200 assists. In MSUM's loss to Northern State he became the first MSUM player to reach 500 assists. Kretchman is also tenth all-time in scoring with 1,464 points and is now second in career three-point field goals made with 237. The senior is also second-best in the NSIC this season in three-point field goals made, averaging 2.7 per game.

Coad Hits 5 Double-Doubles
Junior guard Travaun Coad recorded another double-double at Minnesota Duluth to make it five consecutive double-doubles. The junior guard became the first Dragon to earn a double-double in four or more consecutive games since Alex Novak, Feb. 16-27, 2013. Coad leads the Dragons in double-doubles this season with six.

Park Prevails
Junior Addison Park has been steady player for the Dragons to rely on this season. Park has scored in double-digits is 12 games this season, including a career-high of 21 points at Northern State. The junior is averaging 4.5 rebound per game and also holds a team-best in blocks with 12. Park leads the Dragons in field goal percentage with .583 (95-of163), ranking 11th in the NSIC.

Sophomores Shine
With only one senior on the team this year some younger players stepped up to take a bigger role on the team. The Dragons starting lineup includes sophomores Johnny Beeninga and Matt Anderson. Beeninga scored a career-high 26 points in the Dragons win at U-Mary. He is second on the team, averaging 14.2 points per game and adds 44 assists. Anderson is averaging 6.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, including a season-high of nine rebounds at Concordia-St. Paul. He also adds five blocks and three steals.

Offensive Distribution
The Dragons have gotten some great offensive distribution this season with four players averaging at least 11.0 points per game. Tanner Kretchman (15.4), Johnny Beeninga (14.2) , Travaun Coad (13.2),  and Addison Park (11.1).

All-Time vs. Opponents
MSUM will meet Southwest Minnesota State for the 99th time with the Dragons leading  the series, 56-42.

The Dragons and the Cougars are meeting for the 12th time with MSUM leading the series 9-2.

The Dragons will begin a four-game roadstand at Winona State, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. before traveling to Upper Iowa, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.
