BISMARCK, N.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team won five of six singles matches on its way to a 7-2 win over Southwest Minnesota State in action Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the win, while SMSU fell to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.
"After playing until almost midnight on Friday, it was inevitable that we would start out of the blocks today," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "But we got rolling after a while and took care of business."
The Dragons opened with two doubles wins. Freshman
Julia Geske and sophomore
Olivia Keelin picked up an 8-2 win over SMSU's Gabby Tellijohn and Cora Delich at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, senior
Ricquel Ramsbottom and sophomore
Emma Zamora prevailed by an 8-5 score over Jenna Gannott and Gabby Potthoff. SMSU won by an 8-4 score at No. 2 doubles.
SMSU won at No. 2 singles but the Dragons won the other five slots. Geske beat Tellijohn, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while freshman
Swenne Albert beat Olivia Watzke, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Alyssa Wolf dominated Paige Janka, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Ramsbottom beat Gannott, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. Sophomore
Alexis Konecne also rolled in her match, topping Gabby Potthoff, 6-1, 6-0.
Konecne and Ramsbottom lead MSUM with 6-1 singles marks this season.
MSUM is off until March 5 when it begins its Florida trip in Orlando, Fla. The Dragons will open against Ohio Northern.
