WINONA, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team picked up its seventh straight win on Saturday with a 9-0 win over Upper Iowa in Winona, Minn.
MSUM improved to 14-2 overall – which is the most wins in a season in school history -- and 9-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Upper Iowa fell to 1-11 overall and 1-9 in the league.
The Dragons won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles and also won every contested match on Saturday.
"In this kind of match when we get two forfeits it is very easy to take that lead for granted," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "We certainly didn't do that and remained focused on winning every match."
MSUM swept doubles. Freshman
Julia Geske and sophomore
Olivia Keelin earned an 8-4 win over Anna Okolot and Shakhnaza Zhanatova at No. 1 doubles while the Dragon tandem of sophomore
Alexis Konecne and freshman
Swenne Albert prevailed 8-1 over UIU's Lara Peco and Breanna Heichert.
The Dragons did not lose a set in singles. Geske outlasted Zhanatova, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Keelin beat Okolot, 6-2, 7-5. Albert topped Peco, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Ramsbottom prevailed 6-4, 6-4 over Heichert at No. 5. Sophomore
Alyssa Wolf won by default and was leading Lavanya Singh 6-0, 4-0 when she retired from the match.
MSUM will face Winona State at noon on Sunday in Winona. The winner of that match will finish second outright in the NSIC.
