MSUM Men to Conclude Homestand this Weekend Against Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul

The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team (12-8, 8-6 NSIC) is at home again to conclude their four game homestand. The Dragons take on Minnesota State on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with Concordia-St. Paul the next day at 5:30 p.m. 


LOOKING BACK...

The Dragons are coming off a weekend split. MSUM fell to Minnesota Duluth 77-70 on Jan. 24. The Dragons won the next day against St. Cloud State in the final seconds 80-78.

In the loss to Minnesota Duluth, MSUM shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc compared to 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from three for the Bulldogs. Sophomore guard Gavin Baumgartner scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Off the bench, junior forward Joe Sevlie scored 14 points 5-5 from the field, while sophomore guard Bryce Irsfeld scored 12 points. Junior forward Kaedrick Williams had 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Dane Zimmer scored eight points and led the Dragons on the glass with 11 rebounds.

In the win over St. Cloud State, MSUM shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field and 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from beyond the arc compared to 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three for the Huskies. Sophomore guard Gavin Baumgartner led the Dragons with 25 points. Williams finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Dane Zimmer had nine points and led the Dragons on the glass with 10 rebounds. Beeninga had nine points and dished out a team-high four assists. Off the bench, junior forward Joe Sevlie scored 10 points, while sophomore forward Wyatt Hanson scored nine.


SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION…

Minnesota State

Minnesota Duluth is 11-9 overall this season and 9-5 in the NSIC. Minnesota State is 6-2 in the month of January, with their only losses coming against Sioux Falls and Wayne State. The Mavericks are coming off an 89-77 win over Augustana (S.D) last Saturday. In the win over Augustana, Minnesota State shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field, 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from three, and 88 percent (22-of-25) from the free throw line. The Maverick bench outscored Augie's bench 27-4. Senior forward Cameron Kirksey leads the Mavericks with 17.7 points per game. Freshman forward Ryland Holt is averaging 14 points per game, followed by senior guard Kevin Krieger who is averaging 11.8 points per game. Sophomore center Kelby Kramer leads the team on the glass with 6.9 rebounds per game.

Concordia-St. Paul

St. Cloud State is currently 6-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play. The Golden Bears are currently riding a five-game losing streak. Their last loss came on Jan. 25 against Wayne State, where they lost 66-63. In the loss, CSP shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three. Junior guard Jordan Coblin leads the Golden Bears in scoring with 17.4 points per game, followed by junior forward Cody Carlson with 12.1 points per game. Carlson leads the team in rebounds with 4.7 rebounds per game, followed by Coblin with 4.4 rebounds per game.

Statistical Leaders

Sophomore guards Gavin Baumgartner and Bryce Irsfeld lead the Dragons in scoring. Baumgartner is averaging 16.3 points per game on 49.6 percent shooting while Irsfeld is averaging 12.9 points per game on 47.1 percent shooting. Freshman forward Dane Zimmer leads the way in field goal percentage, shooting 70.5 percent from the field this season. From the free throw line, Irsfeld is 89.6 percent (60-of-67). On the glass, Zimmer leads with 6.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard Johnny Beeninga leads with 3.2 assists per games.
 
Beeninga Bounces Ahead
Senior guard Johnny Beeninga surpassed 1,000 career-points in the loss to Winona State on Jan. 3. Beeninga became just the 33rd Dragon to hit 1,000 points in the program's history. With 14 total points over the weekend, Beeninga continues to climb the MSUM all-time scoring list. Beeninga now has 1,055 career points, which puts him ahead of Jim Bowen for 31st all-time.
 
Run it Back
The 2019-20 Dragons squad features three of their top five scorers from the 2018-19 season. Last year's freshman class contributed 1,172 points which accounted for 44 percent of the team's total offense. MSUM finished 19-12 in the 2018-19 campaign, which included a seven-game winning streak against NSIC opponents. The 19th win for the Dragons marked the second largest improvement from one season to the next with a 12-game improvement. The Dragons are led by team captains Johnny Beeninga, Bryce Irsfeld, and Gavin Baumgartner. MSUM's basketball program is under the guidance of head coach Chad Walthall, who is in his 10th season as head coach of the Dragons. Currently, the Dragons are 12-8 overall and are looking to continue their four-game homestand this weekend against Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul.
 
Home Sweet Home
The Dragons are in the middle of a four-game homestand. Since the 2008-09 season, the Dragons are 119-50, which is a win percentage of 70.4 percent. In all-time matchups with Minnesota State, the Dragons are 33-66. In their previous meeting last season on Feb. 1, the Dragons lost on the road 88-87. In all-time matchups with Concordia-St. Paul, the Dragons are 19-12. In their previous meeting last season on Feb. 2, the Dragons won on the road 102-90. 
 
On the Horizon
Following the home games against Minnesota State and Concordia-St.Paul, the Dragons conclude their four-game homestand. The Dragons head on the road for their next four games. MSUM travels to Marshall, Minn., to take on Southwest Minnesota State on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The next day, the Dragons travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face off with the University of Sioux Falls at 5:30 p.m.
