NSIC Release
BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team has been picked to finish second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference according to a poll of the league coaches released on Thursday. The Dragons open the 2020 season on Saturday vs. Hamline at Lifetime Bloomington South in Bloomington, Minn.
MSUM, entering its eighth season under the direction of Head Coach
Oliver Summers, received 110 points and one first-place vote in the poll. Augustana was picked to repeat as NSIC champions.
MSUM finished 16-4 overall a year ago and 10-1 in the NSIC. The Dragons finished second at the NSIC tournament and in the regular season standings and return their entire roster from a year ago.
"I've very excited to be returning everyone from last season," Summers said. "I'm sure it's not often when a coach has the opportunity to have such continuity in their set-up. I'm also excited with the addition of
Jason Thiner as my assistant. He brings a great amount of tennis knowledge and will only make the team better."
Junior
Julia Geske, a two-time All-NSIC First Team selection in singles, returns after going 13-5 at No. 1 singles last season. She was named the Dragons' player to watch by the NSIC. She was 9-2 in conference matches.
Junior
Lorissa Yuen, playing mainly at No. 2 singles, was 13-2 last season and was an All-NSIC Second Team honoree. She was 8-1 in conference matches
Sophomore
Rachel Nguyen went 14-4 in singles a year ago and was All-NSIC Third Team. Sophomore
Jalyn Kornblum went 10-3. Seniors
Olivia Keelin and
Alexis Konecne each went 10-5 a year ago in singles. The Dragons were 78-28 in singles as a team last season.
Geske and Keelin were All-NSIC First Team in doubles after going 15-4 at No. 1 doubles. Seniors
Emma Wood and
Alexis Konecne were a combined 13-3 in doubles a year ago including 8-1 in the NSIC.
Sophomores
Emma Andersen and
Stevi Parker also return with experience after seeing time in the lineup as freshmen.
"The team knows how to win and we should be full of confidence after last season," Summers said. "My goal is to build on that, continue to improve and go into every match with a belief we can win."
MSUM's home opener is Feb. 8 vs. Minnesota State at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
