MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State University Moorhead sophomore
Shyrone Kemp and junior
Nadir Yusuf each won championships to lead the Dragon men's track and field team to a third-place finish at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships which concluded Saturday at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn.
Nadif Yusuf won the 3K on Saturday.
Kemp picked up his first NSIC championship of his career with a victory in the triple jump. His winning jump was 49-2 1/4. He also earned All-NSIC honors in the high jump, taking third with an NCAA provisional jump of 6-10 1/4. Kemp is in strong position for a spot at nationals as he is ranked eighth in the triple jump at 49-9 1/4. For the weekend Kemp earned All-NSIC honors in the long jump, triple jump and high jump events.
Yusuf won the NSIC title in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:32.71. Yusuf took the lead about 2/3 of the way through the race and opened up a little breathing room to pick up his second NSIC track championship of his career. He won the 5K outdoors in 2019. The Willmar graduate was also All-NSIC in the 5,000 meters on Friday, giving him four honors for his track career so far. Yusuf will await to see if he has earned a trip to nationals; he is ranked 21st in the 5,000 meters.
Junior
Chris Cook was second in the high jump to pick up All-NSIC honors in that event. His jump was 6-10 1/4. Cook is expected to receive a spot at nationals as he is ranked tied for fourth nationally in the event with a school record of 7-0 1/2 he jumped at the Bison Open.
Senior
Jonas Matzen was third in the men's heptathlon at 4,981 points to earn All-NSIC honors in that event. He is ranked 20th in the nation with a score of 5,030 points and also is on the bubble for nationals.
Junior
Nick Marshall was fifth in the mile in 4:19.27. Senior
Zach Sweep finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.47 while junior
Clay Jackson was seventh in 8.61. Sophomore
Ty Dawkins was sixth in the 400 in 50.83.
MSUM's women's 4x400 relay team was eighth in 4:03.78. That consisted of sophomore
Anna Steadland, freshman
Jordan Wurth, senior
Summer Storm and freshman
McKenzie Maki.
National qualifiers will be announced on Tuesday by the NCAA.
