MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped an nonconference doubleheader to Mayville State on Saturday, falling 5-1 and 3-0 at Scheels Field at Nemzek Stadium.
The doubleheader was the home opener for the Dragons (2-8). Mayville State improved to 2-4.
The Dragon offense couldn't string hits together in either game. MSUM left 15 runners on base in the two games.
In the opener, junior right fielder Ally Helgoe was 2-for-3 with a run scored while junior left fielder Shay Weber was 2-for-3. Sophomore designated hitter Kiley Washnieski was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Senior center fielder Elizabeth Johnson and junior first baseman Samantha Gjerde each had hits for the Dragons, who finished with seven for the game.
Junior Anna Lang took the loss for MSUM. She gave up three runs, two earned, in six innings, striking out a season-high nine while walking six. She also hit a batter. Freshman Reece Dahl gave up two earned runs in an inning of work.
MSUM's lone run came in the second when Washnieski ripped a two-out double to score Helgoe, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
In Game 2, freshman shortstop Miah Hartvigsen was 2-for-3 with a double while senior third baseman Emma Dummer was 2-for-3. Weber was 1-for-3.
Dahl took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings. She struck out two and walked seven. Washnieski pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Dragons host Minnesota Crookston in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
