MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday, falling by scores of 12-8 and 11-6.
In the opener, senior third baseman Emma Dummer was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI while junior left fielder Shay Weber was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior second baseman Kaiya Sundeen was 1-for-4 with three RBI. Senior center fielder Elizabeth Johnson was 1-for-5 with an RBI while junior first baseman Samantha Gjerde, freshman shortstop Miah Hartvigsen and sophomore designated hitter Kiley Washnieski each had a hit and scored a run.
Anna Lang gave up seven runs, five earned, in five innings. She struck out three and walked six. Washnieski gave up four runs (three earned) in 0.1 innings while freshman Reece Dahl gave up one earned run in 1.2 innings.
MSUM was down 11-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth but broke through for a six-run inning, their largest single-inning output of the season. Dummer hit a two-run double in the inning while Sundeen had a two-run single. MSUM closed to within 11-8 but got no closer.
In the second game, junior right fielder Ally Helgoe was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Sundeen was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while junior catcher Jordie McNeilly was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dummer, Weber and Johnson each had two hits while Gjerde added a hit.
Dahl took the loss for MSUM, giving up 10 runs, nine earned, in 3.2 innings. She struck out two and walked five. Washnieski pitched well in relief, giving up one earned run in 3.1 innings.
MSUM's next regular season action is set for Wednesday, March 24 vs. Jamestown. The twin bill begins at 2 p.m. in Moorhead.
