MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team picked up its first win over Southwest Minnesota State in 15 years with a 2-1 Game 1 victory on Saturday. The Dragons settled for a split on the day as the Mustangs won Game 2 by a 7-0 score.
MSUM is now 7-21 overall and 4-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while SMSU is 17-11 overall and 8-6 in the league.
It was MSUM's first win over SMSU since May 5, 2006. The Mustangs had won 32 games in a row in the series.
In the opener, senior third baseman Emma Dummer was 2-for-3 with a run scored for MSUM while junior left fielder Jordey Smith and freshman shortstop Miah Hartvigsen were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior first baseman Samantha Gjerde had a double while junior catcher Jordie McNeilly reached on a walk and scored a run.
Freshman Reece Dahl picked up the win for MSUM, giving up just one earned run in seven innings. She struck out five and walked eight but kept the Mustangs to just one run.
"It was good to get over the hump on that drought stretch," MSUM head coach Amanda Reckamp said. "We came out with some energy and got on top of them and then our defense took care of the rest. We got out of a several tight situations and played composed in another tight game."
In the second game MSUM managed four hits, but also committed four errors that led to four unearned runs for SMSU.
Junior left fielder Shay Weber was 1-for-2 with a stolen base for MSUM while Gjerde, junior right fielder Ally Helgoe and junior second baseman Kaiya Sundeen had hits. Junior Jordey Smith and Sundeen had stolen bases.
MSUM hosts Sioux Falls for a doubleheader on Sunday.
"Offensively we just have to come out with more fight," Reckamp said. "We have another chance tomorrow and weather will be a factor. It will be anyone's game to take. It will be a good test for us."
