MSUM Battles in Marshall, Comes up Short Against Mustangs

| By:
MARSHALL, Minn. -- MSUM picked up four individual victories, but fell just short of capturing the dual against Southwest Minnesota State. The Dragons lost 22-12 to the Mustangs on the road.

MSUM would win the first three weights of the dual with Clayson Mele opening the dual with a 10-0 major decision victory. The win was Mele's 11th of the season as the sophomore picked up over five minutes of riding time in the match. Thomas Carrillo followed up his big performance last night with another decision victory. This time, the verdict was not in question, as Carrillo tallied a 13-6 victory of Southwest's Hunter Pfantz.

Hunter Hayes put in another hard-fought performance for the Dragons at 141 pounds. Hayes picked up a decision victory 14-8, just missing a major decision win. The win at 141 pounds brought the Dragon lead to 10-0 through three weight classes. Southwest would come back in the middle weights, picking up two major decisions at 149 and 157 pounds. The Mustangs would win the 165-pound match to put them in front 11-9.

Senior Anthony Castro would put the Dragons back in front as the dual moved into the later weights. Castro picked up a 9-4 decision win to give the Dragons a 13-11 lead with three weights remaining. Southwest would take the final three weights, scoring a massive technical fall at 184 pounds. Two close decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight would propel the Mustangs to a 22-12 dual win (MSUM would forfeit a point).
