MOORHEAD – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team will host Mayville State for a pair of nonconference doubleheaders this week. The Dragons will host the Comets at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and then follow with another home twinbill on Thursday also beginning at 2 p.m.
Both games will be played on the Scheels Field turf.
Thursday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 22 in Mayville but was moved to MSUM because of wet field conditions.
The Dragons met Mayville State earlier this season at the Presentation Dome Tournament with MSUM prevailing 3-1.
The Dragons went 0-6 on their nonconference road trip last week but are looking to get some momentum built with the conference season starting on March 29 at Northern State.
Senior first baseman
Jordey Smith leads MSUM with a .300 average. She and freshman outfielder
Avery Steffen share the lead with four doubles. Freshman infielder
Eliyah McCarthy is hitting .250 and leads with five stolen bases while junior outfielder
Kiley Washnieski leads with five RBI.
Mike Armitage is in his first season as the MSUM head coach.
About Mayville State
The Comets are 2-11 heading into the two doubleheaders. They lost to York, 16-8 in their last contest. Mackenzie Duval leads Mayville with a .371 average to go with two homers and eight RBI. Jocelyn Ontiveros is hitting .323 with five homers and a team-best 15 RBI. On the mound Courtney Boll and Abby Kessel have wins. Vance Christianson is in his first season as the Mayville State head coach.
