Dragon Softball Opens NSIC Slate Tuesday at Northern State

MOORHEAD – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this week with three scheduled doubleheaders on the road. The week starts on Tuesday at Northern State for a doubleheader beginning at noon and will continue Saturday at Bemidji State and Sunday at Minnesota Crookston.
 
MSUM finished nonconference play 3-13 and is coming off of a split with Mayville State on Thursday.
 
Senior first baseman Jordey Smith is hitting .298 with four doubles for MSUM while freshman utility player Avery Steffen is hitting .283 with two homers and 10 RBI. Freshman second baseman Eliyah McCarthy is hitting .262 with three doubles. On the mound senior Anna Lang is 3-6 with a 5.65 ERA in 31 innings and leads with 19 strikeouts. Evey Evans leads MSUM with a 2.96 ERA.
 
Mike Armitage is in his first season as the MSUM head coach.
 
Northern State
Northern State is 8-14 overall heading into the week. The Wolves were swept by Black Hills State on March 23 in their last action. Liv Richardson is hitting .394 with two homers and 12 RBI for Northern while Elly Smith is hitting .322 with two homers and 14 RBI. On the mound Meghan Anderson is 6-7 with a 3.44 ERA in 83.1 innings.  Ashley Schilling is in her first season as the Northern State head coach.
 
Bemidji State
Bemidji State, coached by former Dragon assistant Jordan Petersen, is 3-17 overall. The Beavers lost to Nebraska-Kearney and Wisconsin-Parkside in their last action on March 20 in St. Joseph, Mo. Mariah Stevenson is hitting .302 with five doubles and five RBI while Elaina Christiansen is hitting .260 with three homers and nine RBI. On the mound Stella Dolan is 2-9 with a 3.94 ERA. Petersen is in her first season as the Bemidji State head coach.
 
Minnesota Crookston
Minnesota Crookston is 9-16 on the season, having lost to St. Anselm College on March 20 to cap off a trip to Florida. Alina Avalos is hitting .364 with two homers and 17 RBI while Shaelyn Grant is hitting .281. On the mound Evie Stuck is 5-6 with a 3.39 ERA in 66 innings. Nick Weinmeister in his first season as the UMC head coach.
