Dragon Wrestling Opens NSIC Duals Against Huskies

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead wrestling is set to begin its conference season as the Dragons begin NSIC dual competition on Saturday, December 9 against fifth-ranked St. Cloud State, beginning at 2 p.m. 

The last competition for the Dragons was on December 3 as part of the MSUM-hosted Dragon Open. MSUM bolstered three weight class champions at the open tournament in Isaiah Huus (197 pounds), Jacob Reinardy (165 pounds) and Anthony Sykora (174 pounds). The Dragons had ten total placewinners at the event as well, headlined by Hunter Heim's third-place finish at 125 pounds. 

Huus and 184-pounder Will Price lead the Dragons with 13 wins each so far in 2023-24. Both redshirt freshmen competitors have seven pinfall victories so far this season as does true freshman Anthony Sykora. Heavyweight Quade Peterson leads the team with eight wins by pinfall this year. Price, Sykora and Cade Rose have all registered a pair of technical fall wins this season. Hunter Heim leads the squad with three wins by technical fall in 2023-24. 

MSUM's lone dual of the season came on November 16 as the Dragons defeated Jamestown 38-10. The Dragons claimed all but two weight classes in the dual as MSUM notched pins from Peterson, Rose and Hunter Hayes in the dual. 

Kris Nelson is in his 15th season as MSUM's head coach. 

St. Cloud State was ranked fifth in the latest NWCA Coaches' Poll. The Huskies had five individuals ranked in the top ten to begin the season, headlined by 157-pounder Nick Novak, who is the reigning national champion in that weight class. Steve Costanzo is in his 18th season at the helm of St. Cloud State wrestling.
