MARSHALL, Minn. – A scrappy effort from
Thomas Carrillo would highlight MSU Moorhead wrestling's efforts in dual action against 24th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs would win the dual, 30-8.
The first half of the dual was a back-and-forth affair between the two schools. Southwest Minnesota State would earn a major decision victory to open the contest at 125 pounds. However,
Thomas Carrillo would have a response at 133 pounds as the Rio Rancho, N.M., native scored a quick takedown of Chase Murphy. From there, Carrillo would earn three four-point near falls in quick succession to put Murphy away by tech fall at 2:59. The victory is Carrillo's second in three matches this weekend and his first tech fall of the year.
MSUM would continue its upwards momentum at 141 pounds as
Hunter Hayes would turn In an impressive showing against Jacob Messner. Hayes would work towards his seventh win of the season in a dominant 8-1 decision over Jacob Messner. By the intermission, Southwest Minnesota State led the team scoring, 11-8.
To close the dual,
Airin Spell would turn in another gritty performance at heavyweight. Spell fell down 6-0 in the second period to SMSU's Jacob Dykes before earning an escape and a takedown to trail by three points (7-4).
