Seven Placewinners Headline Dragon Effort at Jimmie Open

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – MSU Moorhead wrestling earned seven placewinners to begin the 2024-25 season at the Jimmie Open on Saturday. 
 
Newcomer Mason Gode led the Dragons at the tournament, earning a runner-up finish at 174 pounds. Gode was solid all day, winning his first three matches before falling to Northern State's Mason Fey in the championship match. Gode earned a sudden victory win to open the morning over Northern State's Travis Smith. 
 
Wayne Mellon also turned in a nice season-opening outing at 184 pounds. Mellon collected a decision victory before falling into the third-place match. Mellon earned a victory by decision over Daevon Vareen of Sioux Falls, 9-5. Liam Babitt had a great start to his collegiate career in the heavyweight class. Babitt began his day with a loss, but would rally for four straight wins to capture fifth place. Three of Babitt's four wins came by fall and the other was a 16-2 major decision. 
 
Isaiah Huus and Anthony Sykora also earned fifth-place finishes at the tournament. Huus collected three wins with a fall and technical fall included in those results. Sykora had four wins on the day, headlined by a major decision and a technical fall. Thomas Carrillo also grabbed a fifth-place spot in the 133-pound class. Carrillo had three wins including a fall at 2:57 over Jamestown's Johnny Colon. 
 
Rounding out the Dragon placewinners was freshman Edon Davis in the 165-pound bracket. Davis picked up three wins, including a sudden victory against Mary's Danyk Jacobsen. Other Dragons picking up wins today included Clayson Mele, Beau Daily, Gunnar Mogen, Jacob Thomas, Damon Ferguson, Wyatt Powell, Will Price, Isaiah Wright and Burak Bowers
